I think some of Jeff Beck's best solo work was his instrumental stuff. Of course before that he was in The Yardbirds and Jeff Beck Group so he didn't build his name off instrumentals per se.

I'd say you can build a name for yourself but dont expect to be too mainstream and dont be surprised if you audience is mostly built of other musicians (ho many non-musicians have you met that even know who people like Jeff Beck are much less like the music). If you want to make a good living doing that music then you gotta be really good too. Bands (especially nowadays) can get away with poor musicianship as long as they have a look and play catchy, uncomplicated songs (jonas bros, fall out boys etc) so you gotta have the chops if you want to make it.
