Learn all the notes and uh... play in the complete dark by ear only? Experiment?

You don't need to buy tab books, you see that link at the very top of this page in the left that says "Guitar Tabs"?; click on that, type in a song or band, and voila, tabs.

Try to transcribe whatever songs that you want to play.
It's not going to be easy, and it's gong to be very tiring at first.
Play the note that you think sounds like the note in the song and check.

you practice listening. Every time you learn a tab make the extra effort to associate the actions you're learning with the sounds that are coming out of the guitar.
