I was just wondering, if I were to cut some of the top off of my current electric, then put another top like flamed maple on it, would it work? Of course I'd have to route out everything, sand everything down etc, but I was thinking of refinishing it anyways. Would it just be like building a guitar from scratch? Glue them together with some strong wood glue or something. I know it won't really do much to the tone or anything, it'd just be different cosmetically.

Lumberjack had a thread going where this is exactly what he did. He planed down a strat body added a top and rerouted.

You could go the veneer approach

Lumberjack has done two guitars like this.

It will effect your tone, but depending on your ears defines whether you'll hear the tone difference or not
