The blues scale is your standard minor pentatonic scale with an extra note added , the flattened 5th (b5).

The formula for the scale would be 1 b3 4 b5 5 b7

And yes it is used very much in blues music.

It's a minor pentatonic with a Tritone added;

A minor pentatonic = A, C, D, E, G

A Blues = A, C, D, D#, E, G

What is the blues scale? And it is commonly used in blues music?

A minor Blues would look like this... well, one position anyway...

--------------------------------------------5-8----------------
---------------------------------------5-8------------------
-----------------------------5-7-(8)------------------
-----------------------5-7-------------------
-------------5-(6)-7------------
--------5-8-------------

The notes in (*) are the blues notes.

and theres also a less common major blues scale, which is a major pentatonic with the added tritone. or augmented 4th what ever you wanna call it.

and yes it is used alot, some blues musicians only use it, but that doenst mean you should.

also you can mix the major and minor blues scales for variation, and for helping add that tension so commonly found in the blues.

You didn't specify which strings it is played on, that could be anything.
