Good thing the father actually did bring up the fact he could be a musician. If I had a child like that, I would not waste a gift from god

i don't think 6 fingers will persist though... humanity has survived just fine with 5... and in todays world... 6 doesnt give anyone a survival advantage

An extra digit may help him in a technical sense (unless it's six fingers in the space of 5, if you get me, which could be a hindrance), but whether he'd be a good musician is the same for him as it is for everyone else- if they have the aptitude, passion and enjoyment for playing.

Heck, I sincerely doubt a sixth finger really would make a huge world of difference.

He might get teased at or looked at funny but he'll prove them wrong with his achieved skills.

Well actually the 6th finger gene is DOMINANT, and in today's world it has a world of real life applications. Mostly job related with fine finger movements(typing)

Evolution is true. XD This kid will be a top shredder if he picks up guitar. Just think, he has one more finger's worth of speed and stretch. And, I'd assume he has one more finger BEFORE the pinky. As in, you're pinky is the least accurate, but he has a finger after it, so that finger will be the least accurate. On a side note, he's going to have fun learning math. :P

how's he gonna flick people off?

With the middle finger

At least, he'll have a true visible one, if you look at the gesture, you don't really see the thumb anyway.

agreed. Hope they start him young on flamenco, or something classical where he's really using all six fingers. Not that metal's a waste or anything against you metalheads...

yeah, but natural selection wouldn't really make a play on that unless women are now choosing who they sex up based off of finger number.

I think people don't understand that, even though polydactyly is caused by a dominant gene, it probably isn't an emerging evolutionary trait. The fact that it's dominant, and only occurs in 1 case per 500 leads me to think this. In fact, I'd say that the polydactyly gene is a genetic artifact from tetrapods, which did have upwards of six digits. Amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals lost at least one digit from these tetrapods- amphibians have 4 on the back feet, 5 on the front, and birds, reptiles and mammals (amniotes) all have, or have structural evidence of, 5 digits. Natural selection favoured 5 digits in the end. Just my guess anyway.

I couldn't think of a reason that it would be more efficient to have less fingers, I couldn't see it really making a survival difference. I would think it'd just be more of a mutation thing.

A mutation becoming an emergent trait is still driven by natural selection.

And research suggests that number of fingers increases touch register time in some applications

Maybe it had something to do with that?
