I am replacing pickups in my bass that has a split pickup and a jazz style pickup. The split pickup works fine. On the Jazz Style pickup (bridge) it only works on the high strings and is dead on the low end. I've tested it by taping with the screwdriver. Therse are passive pickups. Can half of the pickup be bad like that?
yeah, stuff like that can happen, id suggest having a professional check it before you go and buy a new pickup

have you tried raising it so it is closer to the string?

Yeah.. dead. Even when I tap it with a screwdriver it is clear that half of the pickup is dead.
It's probably an inline humbucker, like a DiMarzio Ultra Jazz. Basically there's one coil under the E and A, and one under the D and G. I guess one's got a short?
Nope, no sig here.
