So basically, if you any of you guys saw my other thread begging for help in building a silverburst les paul then you know that maybe I can't pull that off.

But, if I got a big blank piece of pretty nice quality maple and made it into a tele, with a nice bolt on neck from allparts I think that it would get my feet wet enough to start stepping it up.

So, my new project would be a simple telecaster.

I just need a few questions answered and I think I can get right to work, after all the only hard cutting parts on a tele is the routing pockets, and I don't think you even need a band saw to cut the tele shape out.

What stain would leave the wood looking as natural as possible, or should I just leave it naked?
Any body got a number for a good lumber yard in nyc? I hate the luthier billet bull ebay people do.
I know this isn't a "build" but its more than I think 87% of the population would be willing to do lol.

Opinions of a maple body, mini jb, tele neck pickup, maple neck w/black inlays?

I want it to be natural but yet black and smooth, so all hardware will be black chrome or straight black.

Thoughts?

Pine is a good wood to build with, altho a bit soft. Look for some nice Alder, or maybe Ash if the weight wont be a problem. Basswoods not bad either, but its also rather soft. Personally, id go with alder, maybe with a blonde finish like "Blackguard"(?) teles commonly have.

How else are you going to cut the shape out? Using a coping saw will take ages.
And if you have a router, then the cavities won't be too difficult to do (I'm using mortice chisels and it isn't very difficult).

BTW, how much woodworking experience do you have? If the answer is little to none, then simple things will be incredibly difficult for you. Make sure you practice things (eg filing, using planes/spokeshaves etc) on scrap wood first.

Well I've been around power tools my entire life. I've used table saws and jigsaws before, sanded my fair share of stuff, I mean I can handle a screw gun like a pro and I have the ability to learn pretty quickly.

And I know that with a coping saw, if the width of the wood is anything > .5" it takes forever.

I'm thinking either alder or ash right now... gotta find some saw mills nearby. I can always take two pieces and glue them together right?

Also, how thick is a tele?

For a neck?

Looks like hard maple, but wait for LP Addict to be sure.

Not for a body man, it's 4.5" wide, meaning you would need a 3 piece body, and it's only 38" long, barely long enough for 2 piece body.

I updated the link to a larger piece, how about now? The dimensions for a tele are 1' 13/16" wide by 1' 4" thick right?.

Yes, that should be fine for a 2 piece.

It will give you dimesions of like... 21" x 12-1/4" x 1-11/16"

The reduction in thickness by a sixteenth of an inch is to accomodate for sanding and such.

EDIT: If the tele is 12-13/16" you are missing 1/16" width wise... also expect to loose some when you prepare the two faces for joining.

No it will not work.

According to my math.

I sent him a pm asking for the price of a tele sized piece in maple ash and pine just to get a price comparison.

I'm perfectly ok with spending 50ish dollars on body wood, after all I think thats one of the more important pieces no?

It might be more than $50 when you include shipping.

Don't you have a local lumber yard?

There are a few but I don't think they have pieces of lumber of that size. I'm going to make a few phone calls tomorrow morning to see what I can come up with.

I'm looking for maple/ash/pine 18" long, 14" wide, 1 3/4" thick...

is that right?

Lumber yards have lumber of literally any size you could want.

A 24 x 14 x 2 piece of ash is practically scrap to a lot of places. El cheapa.

Don't get things from the internet that you can get locally for less money.

IMO, go with butterscotch blonde and a black guard.

And rhino, I actually have no respectable lumber yards in my area (as far as I know). They're all building supply stores.

I guess that's what I get for living in Kansas.

I'll agree that blonde with black would look sweet as **** but I LOVE the look of a nice natural finish. Something that lets the wood breathe.

I think it's empty. The items aren't showing up in that link.

Don't get me wrong, I love natural finishes, and if you have a really nice piece of wood that gets painted over then you deserve to be kicked in the crotch with a steel toed boot, but butterscotch blonde w/ a black pickguard looks AMAZING, especially after years and years of abuse. Like Springsteen's Tele.

Its not the size that counts its what you can play on it. lol

I'm going to guitar center to check the actual thickness of an american tele. LP said like 60 or so plus shipping for a glued two piece of maple. He said he'd even plane it for me. What a guy lol.

I'd like to find a neck for 60ish and on ebay there are a few mightymite necks on sale so I'll check them when I get home.

Whats so good about them anyway?

On the notion of looking for a lumber yard, there are no real places to get what I want in NYC but once you get out of the state things change. Lots of nice people in the 518 area code lol. One guy wanted to sell me a maple tree basically for about 25 bucks, but then he got saddened when I asked him if it was dried.... lol green white maple a tele caster does not make.

Also I'm waiting for a return call back from a NY state lumber yard that specializes in making custom pieces of lumber, ghant lumber, apparently makes wood however the heck you want it and the women I spoke to was quite friendly. I'll wait for them to call back before I make a move.

That'll piss off some workers at GC.

sesstreets: *picks up MIA Tele*
GC Employee: Hey, cool. Good choice. Wanna try it out?
sesstreets: No, I'm just measuring it.
GC Employee: Huh? How come?
sesstreets: Because I'm going to build my own guitar instead of buying from the Wal-Mart of music stores.

So yeah I just got back from the GC in brooklyn, talk to Bryan if you ever need anything from that store; great knowledgeable guy, been working at guitar stores for almost 10 years, he definitly knows more than most people there.

Its 1 3/4 most DEFINITLY.

And wow holy **** check out my surprise when I told this dude Bryan about this, he said, and this is almost a 100% quote:

"I'd pee a little if you came in with even the remote outline for a tele"

and after offering to sell it:

"Yeah sure"

And asking what he'd pay:

"Let me put it this way if you show me pictures of a neck attached to a body I'll give you all that you paid for on wood and I'll buy the components I want"

So, my first guitar build and I'm already selling it =D

He liked my idea of the natural finish with all chrome black hardware, I said "yeah, perfect clean recording tone right" "exactly" he said. **** yeah.

As far as what he wants specifically, a 57 gibson classic in the bridge and a fender noiseless in the neck instead of the jb jr bridge, alnico 5 neck that I was planning. And he also wants to splurge on these auto trim tuning machines to which I replied "wtf?" "yeah I've had them on my guitars for a long time and they're great" so thats what goes on, and they have a nice black w/chrome tuner look to them. Should go REALLY nice with the tele bridge I'm looking at.

Lp addict got back to me stating I could get any neck from allparts for a pretty damn good discount and that he will buy the wood when I send him money.

Thoughts?
Personally I'm ****ing psyhced.

But, can I cut out a tele outline with a jigsaw? lol
And besides a router how else would one get the neck pocket and the pickup/control cavity cut out?

When I buy blanks from my lumber place, the guy that cuts the wood out in the warehouse is always like "That's all you need? Christ I can't believe they charged you for a 2' piece."

It's not scrap..all he meant was that normally people get huge ass pieces from them.
