Halfway there...IMO they must also LIKE to play those genres, or they'll never put their whole heart into it.

Why is it that some folks quote praise from other members in their sig lines?

Those are the qualities. A sesson guitarist would also require the contacts (or luck) to have gotten into that line of work. Also a large amount of theoretical knowlege is required.

Jimmy Page said in an interview about his session guitar days, that he knew almost no theory when he started, and yet picked up loads of it along the way. But obviously that was back in the day, and he's very talented.

That's being versatile, which is one quality a talented session guitarist needs. Being versatile, however, isn't the only skill that a session musician needs. To be successful at session work, you'd also need at least a moderate knowledge of theory, experience in those genres, and like was mentioned before - at least a decent like of playing them, otherwise it'll never sound right. While a good ear can sometimes compensate for theory knowledge, it's still a good idea to get at least a basic knowledge of it, IMO.

That and buckets of theory knowledge. If you can't sight read any piece of sheet music you're given then don't try to be honest.

If you can listen to a passage once, then play it, yes you can. But you have to really train your ear.

You're pigeonholing that shit.

A session musician is someone who has enough knowledge of their instrument to be able to apply it to whatever they need to.
