You know, you never see enough Modernes, I think they're perfectly neat looking guitars, and you've done a good job with this so far

Anyone else see the irony in smashing a guitar that says "peace and love" ?

Good to see another NZer!
Did you build the neck too?
Looks good by the way, give us a demo to show how the Rimu sounds.
I don't remember where I was,
When I realized life was a game.
The more seriously I took things,
The harder the rules became.

na im only 14 and dont have enough tools or money to build the neck took it of a electric i hated . but reshaped the headstock will upload tomorrow

Actually, it seems as though you only need the power tools you should already have for making the body, along with some hand tools, to build a neck.

Hey i'm actually planning a moderne build right now for my woodworking final project that i start in a few weeks. Im ordering the template tonite, a couple questions:
1. Is it a one piece body? or two? and what was the board foot of the blank you ordered (thickness, width, and length?)
2. What is your recommendation for strap button location? I'm putting one behind the neck and i'm wondering whether I should put the other one either on the tip of the upper wing or on the inside. I'm thinking the inside of the upper wing location would be more balanced.

Thanks for any help
I don't need a signature to tell you I don't need a signature!

two piece body. for the strap button im putting one behind the neck but also having trouble deciding what would look and feel better im leaning towards the tip for looks but also inside the upper wing for balance and comfort. im putting it on 2mrw so i show you what i've done and tell you if i go it right or wrong location.

my blank i just got from a local demo yard im actually gonna do another moderne soon and sell it as i have enough for 2 but im keeping this one. i would make it 37mm thick mines about 40mm which is fine but it could be more thinner.and 3mm make all the difference

Awesome. I wish someone would build a V2.

If they go all in with V-shaped pickups and awesome crazy bevels then I'm all for that. Aww yeah.

Nice. Glad to see Gibson's wilder designs being given some publicity.

Now if only someone would build a Corvus...

Hey, I know i'm slightly necroing this thread, and hopefully not jacking it. I want to build a guitar for my synth-rock band, and I came across this thread, now a few questions.

Can anyone point me to some templates that I was unable to find through Google?

Do any of them include the "Gumby" headstock?

Also I plan on it being a baritone, so I was looking for any tips on keeping the same feel as a Gibson neck but with a 27" scale for Ab-Ab tuning.

Thanks in advance for all your time.

i love the body timber, don't know why you covered it up with white paint.

And thats an unusual body shape, don't know if i like it. :/

You don't need power or expensive tools to build a neck. Just a few rasps, files and a spokeshave is all you need. Should cost no more than $50 max.
#31
Love the shape! Most people haven't even heard of the Moderne, but I love it. Sort of the lost 3rd sibling to the V and Explorer.

You probably won't find templates. These are practically extinct, along with V2s and Original Flying Vs. And only Epi still makes the Futura (in the Apparition series), which is like an Explorer but with a narrower upper but and a skinnier waist.
#33
I think it was 6 or 7 years ago that Epi did the "Poly-V", "Poly-X", and "Poly-M", which were a floyd equipped V, Explorer, and Moderne. Can't find ANYTHING about them online now, but that was the last Moderne reissue I've seen.

I almost ordered an Explorer from Sam Ash (I was like 13) but I ended up getting a Greg Bennet Explorer instead.

Sam Ash used to run a 2-page spread ad in old Guitar One magazines... they were in there every month until they sort of disappeared.

But ****, for $250, I'd buy one now!

Let me flip through one real quick and I'll tell you when/where. I've got like 100 back issues of G1/Gtr World/Gtr Player catalogued (so I can pull the sheet music quickly if a student wants to learn a song)

I have a bunch of old 2004/05 issues of GW. As a promo or something they included 3 or 4 issues of G1 and the premier issue of Harman Pro. Some recording/sound engineering mag.
#39
Yeah, they all shared a publisher. When G1 went under, GW picked up the rest of my subscription.

The most recent ad with the Moderne that I could find was Jan 2003. Jon Frusciante was on the cover.

And apparently it was $150. I would be ALL OVER THAT today.
