What amp are you currently using? If you want a good say hard rock tone, you need to have an amp capable of that sort of gain and also pickups. The amp will make the biggest difference, the next biggest will be the pickups. I've got a Duncan Custom Custom on my HSS Strat and when I'm on the humbucker on my Traynor YCV-50, it gives a very convincing "hard rock" tone.
my MG15DFX has a button that simulates the sound of one of the expensive tube marshall amps

Fender Stratocaster HSS
LTD EC-400AT
Traynor YCV-50 Blue
Peavey Envoy 110

Wishlist: Hamer USA Explorer, Gibson Explorer

There are much better pedals out there. It depends on your amp to, a cheap SS, MG spider etc it wouldnt do much for you. Also what kind of tone your looking for. Single coils may not be the way to go if your looking to to play really heavy stuff.
