JCM2000 is a bit more versatile, i'll give you that. a lot of it comes down to what voicing you're looking for, the 5150 is distinctly more american than the marshall. any examples of a sound similar to what your looking for?

Head and Cab for $130? You don't need a head and cabinet, you need a psychological examination.

You haven't really specified anything else...

okay well, i'm playing deathmetal. I'm looking for a cleaner distorted tone. Something like the bands Whitechapel, Suicide Silence, and Veil of Maya sound like.

right now im thinking the 5150 will suit you better for that raw sound. just wondering though, is there any way you can A/B them side to side?

see thats what I have been hearing and I was actually recomended by our producer when we were in the studio not too long ago. He said i would find it to be much more beneficial for the sound i was bringing out of my Marshall

Although I think the 5150 will be more to your liking, the trade is not a fair one.
The Marshall is worth more money than the 5150.

Yeah, thought so.

That's another question, what would a 5150 go for now-a-days?

it means comparing them, but people say that you A/B amps because a lot of times you use an A/B box. so can you get your hands on the 5150 to try it out next to your marshall?

500-700 are average prices (including the 2x12 combo).

EDIT: used, of course.

There's one at a pawn shop near here for 900, the pawnshop is pretty expensive and inflates things about 20%. So yeah, 500-700 is probably an accurate price range. The JCM is worth more brand new, will sell faster, so it probably retains more used value.

You mean could you run them together? By AB?

yess?
Together as in at the same time? No, you would need an A/B/Y box.
A/B lets you switch between two amp or guitars but the Y is needed to run them simutainiously (sp)

Not really, I'm just going to assume he has a DSL 100. The DSLs sell from $600-800, whereas the 5150s are in the $600-800, though the 5150s are found lower in the range more often.

If you can get the guy to add $100 on top of it, that'd always be good, but for the sound you're going for, what you'd technically lose on the trade, would be made up for in sound quality for what you're looking for.

If you can get him to include something else in the package like some good quality cables or a bunch of small things it could make it more even.
