If you don't run it through the poweramp, your tone will sound like hell. The preamp out is there so that you can send the preamp signal to a different power amp.
I'm putting my GAS on hold
for a couple months in order to pimp my ride.

Don't judge me.

No. You signal will not be amplified enough to do anything with it; it has to run through the power amp first. That's called the effects loop, you put things there that you don't want in front of the preamp.

tish and pish - I can play my guitar plugging it straight into the soundcard and get a sound.

you would need some sort of speaker emulation, look up for some cabinet impulses and how to use them
periphery/bulb!

gear:
Ibanez RG7321 w/ D-sonic in bridge

Peavey 5150 mk ii & b52 4x12 cab

line 6 podxt for recording

Head and Cab for $130? You don't need a head and cabinet, you need a psychological examination.
