About politics, religion, anything? I live in the USA, and go to a public school. It's really annoying because we have intense class discussions where we all debate about the aforementioned issues but the teacher (and in other classes as well) say they can't give their opinion. Is this because they think they'll influence us? Anyone have the answer?

Along with aforementioned points, it puts them in a difficult position when parents get a hold of teachers with openly opposing views becuase oftentimes, regardless of the merit of the teacher, parents can be very disagreeable and take their child out of the class just because of the teacher's beliefs.

Plus, it's just a learning environment. They don't want kids to think that the teacher's opinion is correct just because they're the teacher.

One history teacher I had in high school told us a story about failing a student on a project that they half assed, and their parent's complained to the principal that the only reason was because she had differing political views.

I'd imagine that is the main reason; although, I've had some teachers that make their political views fairly obvious.

Because students are meant to design their own beliefs and opinions on views and such.
If the teacher steps in as a higher power of education (which they are) some students will take it as fact, and a hell of a lot of parents don't like that.
I hope it doesn't seem, like I'm young, foolish, and green.

Wrong, we revolted because of no religious freedom moron. It clearly states in our constitution that religion and state are to be kept separate. It is good to learn everything that is out there, not just shoving one thing down everybody's throats. We don't force evolution, we just tell it like it provably is.
#21
People are forgetting evolution is still just a theory.

Religions are built upon faith, or belief without any evidence. The Big Bang theory has lots of evidence, making it a scientific theory (obviously). Unless all that cosmic background radiation is just God's fart spreading around the universe.

Yes evolution is a theory. They teach it in school because it's a scientific theory. Once you get to highschool and take a religion class, you can talk about all you want. In science class you talk about Science.

@ TS - It's because Parents will complain if they don't agree with the teachers point of view/don't want their kids to think the teacher is 100% right because he/shes the teacher.

You're all wrong (mostly)

The simple answer is that teachers work for and represent the Government. They're not supposed to represent anything that our government doesn't. (such as specific political parties, religions, or ethnicities)

I have to say, I dearly love Bendystraw's arguments, They make me want to read threads.

Anyway, I'd say TS hit the nail on the head with his statement; Teachers cannot allow students to know their own views as it is likely the teacher's views will affect the students.

A well established and almost universally accepted theory with vast amounts of overwhelming empirical evidence, yes.

You don't actually know what a scientific theory is, do you? The scientific definition of theory isn't the same as the common definition. Scientific theories achieve that status after sufficient observation and evidence has been accumulated, and are supported by scientific evidence. Evolution has been proven. No actual scientist, whether a biologist or physicist, actually doubts evolution.

My teachers expressed their personal views in my public high school. That's all my peace studies class was, some old washed up extreme liberal preaching what he thought was right and having debates with the class (and largely ignoring the points made against him) while pushing misleading/outdated statistics on us.

I suppose it's because people are stupid and offended easily though.

Because to do so is a terrible abomination. Check my profile, I've been involved in politics in both major parties for over a decade, yet my wife and children have never been with me to a single event. I follow the political thread all the time, but practically never post an actual opinion, just an encouragement to all to examine their own assumptions with the same zeal used against adversaries. Further, the inherent honesty of children is pretty much the only reason i come to this site at all. What you guys lack in real world understanding, you make up for by truly believing what you say, and say it without censorship. I know damn well the opinions of adults around me, and the bias due to intentions of personal gain. I consider posts by Meths, TrickyCindy, URall$hit, to be mostly socialist propaganda. However, I also give them a high amount of credibility and merit, because they are driven by belief in ideas instead of an actual quest for political power. Teachers in general likely feel the same way as I do. One of the most evil things an adult can do is manipulate a child.

EDIT And yeah, most are prohibited from preaching opinion, not so much by law as by unspoken mandate

A teacher is perfectly capable of giving his opinion in a discussion/debate, however it is another thing to teach his opinion as if it were fact. I don't see any problem with the former and it can only be beneficial by presenting different perspectives on the same issues to students. The material mandated from district to district is largely biased in any case, usually to promote nationalism and by presenting selective facts from history.

Our Canadian social class is all based on opinions and sharing opinions and essays and class disscusions based on the opinions. Often our teacher states an outrageous opinion to have us react furiosly and share our opinions. For example He says: "The only individuals in society are the people like Hitler, Charles Manson, and Robert Pickton." We Say: "no thats a rather durastic and unrealistic realization/opinion...yatah yatah... so on so forth..."
And our physics teacher discusses religous/political views when asked by a student, but otherwise he doesnt bring it up out of the blue.

Say that there are brown Butterflies, right? There are brown butterflies that live in a forest with brown bark, camouflaging them. Now there is also a mutation of these butterflies around. These butterflies are white, but get eaten and have less of a chance of reproducing, since they don't blend in since their environment is not fit for them to hide in. Suddenly there is a change in environment and the bark grows white mold. Now the brown butterflies have no chance of blending in and the white ones have a greater chance of living and reproducing. The brown ones die out slowly and are replaced by the superior white ones.

There you go, survival of the fittest, evolution, fact.

Of course. Also, irrelevent.

They hold a position of authority. That tends to automatically give their opinions merit where it may not necessarily be deserved. In general, at least in the area in which I grew up, even if the teacher specifically stated "This is only opinion", only the top ten percent of students heard it that way. To the rest, they generally took things at face value without question. Assuming they were listening

EDIT Sarcasm or hyperbole start discussion is fine. I say absurd things I don't believe frequently, but its just to show other angles, not "I'm right, this is how things are".

Eh, true I suppose. It's still ridiculous that they aren't allowed to offer their opinions and have to take an unbiased stance during debates. Our education system does have a slew of problems and I suppose this isn't one of the more important ones.
