i know there is a technique to it, but i have no idea what it is. i don't know if this is the right place, but i don't know how to get that sound of a song like "sex machine" by james brown. all my mutes and picking of the chords sound way to harsh. anyone have any tips?

There's a great book from MI called Funk Guitar the Essential Guide. It's from Hal Leonard press. It covers everything; chords, strumming, scale choices.
There's my way and the wrong way.

Practice 16th note strumming, with 3 mutes and one "sounded" chord for each group of four. Displace the "sounded" chord by one sixteenth each time, till you come round again.

Do variations on this.

Practice starting on both down and upstrokes.

E7#9 ("Hendrix chord") is the best chord to use, since it's easy to repeatedly mute and press.

Sus chords.

Examples please? What I've found is that Funk mostly uses non-resolving 7th chords and extensions (9ths, 13ths, etc.)
