ive been told by my doctor that to effectively get rid of my insomnia, which has gotten so bad im pretty much feeling jet lagged all day, is to stay up 24 hours then go to sleep the next day.

now i tried it yesterday and i fell asleep at 930AM, i had been playing xbox almost all night and right in the middle of playing fable i just kinda layed on my side and fell dead asleep.
im trying it again tonight and i need some foolproof ways to keep myself awake until the next night.
Suggestions?
Crazy doctor?

It doesn't work
Or it didn't for me
I've had insomnia for 6/7 years now, and I regularly stay up for 24 hours (one time 104)
It makes you sleep for longer for one night
Then return to normal
After the 104 hours I actually slept for 2 hours the next night and felt fine again

where do i acquire pure lemon juice?
watching Samuel L Jackson beat the living crap out of some snakes should keep me up for a while even without the lemon juice.

What an odd directive, that's not going to cure it at all! That's like telling a guy with diabetes to stop taking insuline for a while.

I am a psychology student trying for premed... I also had insomnia for about a year. It's not fun stuff but the best cure is a lifestyle change. And, of course, prescription medicine.

Don't lay around and play XBox... bad, bad idea. Avoid your bed/chair/couch for the most part(and not just tonight). Reduce the amount of resting time and work your body and your mind. Play guitar, read, you're probably in school or a guitarist at least.

.... and I answer this pulling an all-nighter cramming for exams. :P

yeah i kinda thought it was odd at first, but im a bit desperate to get rid of this insomnia now, even massive amounts of the herbals arent knocking me out, so i figured what the hell ill try it.

and my friend josh has diabetes, i wonder what he would say if i told him to stop taking insulin for a while.

im just staying up listening to some metal and playing video games. if you have a real problem with falling asleep, do more activities during the day, not necessarily heavy physical stuff, just do something. also stay away from your bed/bedroom, train your body to know when its time to sleep... sounds crazy but it works so eh...

If anything it might get you one night's sleep because insomnia is very complicated. Is he really a doctor?

He'd probably ask you to stay away from his medicine cabinet.

When I need to sort myself out, I get up at 6pm, stay up all night then go to bed at 8pm the next day. You SHOULD be able to get up around 8am the following day.

You can then get back into a proper pattern by avoiding large doses of caffeine.

For insomnia that doesn't work at all
You're predisposed to sleep very small amounts
If you stay awake for one day, you can sleep a small amount more the next
Then you revert to normal

For most people insomnia is either over a day or two, or a week or two, it's an intermittent, small time-period problem, anyone who thinks staying awake for an entire day resolved it for them was probably coming out of the cycle anyway.

I've slept 2 to 4 hours a night, if at all, for 7 years, as I've said, I've stayed awake for 104 hours before, and it didn't change a thing. Staying awake doesn't cure an illness which makes you stay awake, if anything you're now built to sleep less, I find 2 hours more than sufficient depending on how long a day I've had, why would that change if I tire myself for only one day?

You got the standard responce from doctors - you're young so the chances are it's not insomnia, just a really ****ed up sleeping pattern. 4 or 5 of my friends thought they had insomnia during 6th form and/or university - only one of them actually did.

Just do something that you can't stop doing.

Or play some addictive games.

well the sleeping pattern i have is extremely ****ed up.
i suffer from migraines as well, so before they were under control i would lie awake in bed with a migraine, and as anyone who gets them knows, you cant fall asleep with one.
so now im up until about four, or five AM every night, tossing, turning, and cursing.

not good for someone my age really.

screw insomnia, its now 4:22 in the morning where i live and i'm not tired at all. i have a very important test that i have to take tomorrow, one that directly affects my future and i'll probably sleep through the whole thing.

That's not insomnia then. It's a terrible sleep pattern
Insomnia is the inability to fall asleep and stay sleep
If you can't sleep now, but will either sleep for hours, or can fall asleep easily during the day, that's not insomnia.

they use medical marijuana to treat migraines and insomnia in extreme cases meaning its probably doing more good than bad for my insomnia and my chronic pain(huh chronic pain just noticed that one)

if you're falling asleep then you havent got insomnia, you're nocturnal, which means u sleep thru the day and live by night, insomnia is not sleeping at all.

force ya self to stay awake, or when you do go to sleep in the morning, get up early afternoon ull be tired again by midnight and will sleep properly.

or do something energetic during the day to wear yourself out, rather than sat on your xbox!

Not quite
Insomnia is finding it difficult to sleep and/or remain asleep, it could become sleeping in the day and not the night
Insomniacs do sleep, they just struggle to, and they don't sleep much.

And, for the record, playing on an Xbox etc is mentally tiring, which is normally enough to encourage sleep, you can sleep without being physically exhausted, but without some form of mental tiredness, you simply can't, your body has no need to.

If you can't stay up 24 hours, you don't have insomnia, probably just some sleeping issues.

Anyway, read. Preferably a gripping horror or thriller. Movies could work but they don't last as long, a book will take you the whole night.
From experience, caffiene and such doesn't really help long term, its just a short buzz, i'd suggest not taking any.

Or you might wanna try fapping, all night.
#39
lol doesn't anyone find this weird: a guy with insomnia is worried about the fact that he can't stay awake lol.

but seriously, i think going out, in the city will force you to stay awake, if you start feeling tired just go for a jog or keep a bucet pf coold wate rneaar you so that you caqn pour it over you to be wide awake again.
