I found a serial breakdown for Splawns, and mine was built in 2008. When was the volume loop introduced?

Damn that was a quick reply

Mine doesn't have it, so I'm curious. It's number 755, I guess it's an earlier '08 then since no loop volume

The loop volume was installed starting in 2010 IIRC

The 755 was the last 3 numbers haha, the full serial is 108755. Making it a 2008 model without the loop volume.

Then I found this which I don't think I've seen before either. Good demo going from clean - low gain - high gain.

I hate every one of you guys.

I've been waiting for a Splawn to show up used in my area. I got tired of waiting and purchased another amp... and boom... a Quick Rod shows up 30 minutes from me for the price I was hoping to find one.

Holy crap it's been a long time since I've been here! Good to see this thread back on the first page.

Well, my QR is down at the moment unfortunately. It fried a couple power tubes on me. I haven't biased it in a long time, but when I did it was set to the recommended 30-31 mA and worked fine for a long time. Recently I had some electrical issues in the shop I practiced in, and I'm afraid that may have caused some damage to the amp.

Looks like a call to Splawn is in order. I don't know of anyone here in Arkansas who can work on these things.

End of sob story. Glad to be back!

^ good to see ya

sorry to hear about your Splawn

Did you buy it new? If so, you may be able to take it to an authorized dealer. There are none in Arkansas though.

If you bought it used, then it doesn't matter. Just take to a reputable tech and find out what is wrong. If I had to guess, I'd say it is a blown resistor or fuse. Fuses are easy to replace. Get a handful of spare fuses and some extra power tubes. You need those laying around anyway.

Good luck mang!

I bought it new from Blues City Music in Memphis. They are a dealer (or at least were back then, it's been about 6 years ago).

I'll give the fuses a look, hadn't thought about that yet. Thanks for the pointer.

^ I don't see them on the Splawn dealer page but that doesn't mean they don't still support them.

http://splawnguitars.com/dealers.htm

Sucks that you may have to ship it somewhere though. I'd be happy to try to help troubleshoot it with you but keep in mind I am not a tech and I am not an EE. Just a basement warrior who's picked up some pointers over the years.

First of all - I have a biasing blog in my profile that has some safety tips
Did the tubes die while you were playing the amp?
How do you know the tubes died? Did they die in pairs? How many?
Locate the mains fuse on the back of the amp. Jot that model down and go get some from Radio Shack or whatever.
See if mains fuse is blown. If not, move on to power tubes. Feel free to replace fuse anyway.
If mains fuse is blown then take all the power tubes out and put a new fuse in.
Power up and see what happens to fuse.
Put two known good power tubes in the middle two positions and set amp to half power.
Drop your ohms in half. Half of what you normally would set it at.
Power up and see what happens.

If at this point you have no success then the next steps (more dangerous steps) is to take the amp chassis out of the headshell.

Now you will be looking for any high tension fuses near the power supply side of the amp. Take them out and inspect them. Jot down the model and get some more of those as well. Replace as needed.

Inspect the internal side of the amp carefully.

Put one hand in your pocket.
Get a chop stick, pencil, wooden spoon, etc.
You are now looking for any blown resistors, scarring, black residue, burnt wires, etc. Start on the power supply side - moving toward the filter caps, screen grid resistors, preamp, output transformer etc.

If you are still at a loss by this point and the amp still makes no sound - then ship it off to Scott.

You shouldn't void your warranty by doing some preliminary investigative work. Obviously call Scott first. He can be hard to get a hold of lately. Try early in the morning or later at night. He may tell you to do nothing and ship it to him immediately

Hope that helps.

This is the first time I've heard of a Splawn having problems (that I can remember). Mine have been pretty bullet-proof. 311 gives some pretty good basic troubleshooting steps.
