turn down the bass, turn up the mids and treble, for starters.
a digitech bad monkey or ibanez tube screamer with the gain on 0 and the level on 10 will tighten up and clarify tone as well, but your problem definitely sounds like EQing.

Start with a good amp and good guitar for the sound you're going for.

Perhaps take a sound engineering course

Don't expect miracles from gear not designed to do what you want it to do.

Don't expect something for a Less than $100 price tag to give you $15000 performance. A realistic expectation and understanding will take you a long way.

Learn about the gear that your heroes use to achieve the tones you're interested in and start with that.

Play with your settings, turn your mids up. Don't use pedals that have names and logos on them that make you want to say "OMG itz lyke so h@rdc0re!!!!1"

Mud = bass. Therefore, less bass = less mud. Listen to tight tones such as evh and slash, very little bass.

That's the same as him EQing a few things...

Like everyone else said, less bass, more mids and treble.

You'd benefit from new pickups probably...or a TS-9.

I've heard EQ pedals work wonders for the B-52 amps. I own a MXR M-108 and it's godly for cleaning mud and making things smooth. My amp was like a dirt hut before I got it, and now it's all glass.

No it isn't. It adjusts the phase, it doesn't do anything to the equalization.

Head and Cab for $130? You don't need a head and cabinet, you need a psychological examination.
