What do you consider fast?

Theory is descriptive, not prescriptive.

theory states 1+1=2 sometimes in music 1+1=3.

Well, I would recommend the petrucci excercise for you (with metronome of course)

If you don't like it you could still do your own excercise

And one more thing: Take your time and don't push yourself too much if it comes up to speed.

Nobody can say how long it would take. Some people catch on fast, some people not so much. It also depends on what your definition of fast is and what you want to play.

You can't beat simple chromatic 4 note patterns all over the neck for building sheer speed, like the ones posted above. But break them up and do 3 note per string patterns and other variations in order to build your dexterity and accuracy as well as your speed.
