My school bad director has a bunch of old and new preamps and power amps laying around that I've been messing with but I don't really like any of their sounds. Unfortunately he got me into the whole separate preamp/power amp rack thing. I understand how racks work, I have one for my home audio system. I'm having trouble finding the sound I want though, so I want to know if it even exists. Most people who have racks play high gain and such.

Is there a vintagey sounding tube preamp with a clean sound that doesn't sound stale like most preamps I've encountered.

Dont waste your time with racks, just buy a good clean combo or head like a Roland JC-120 or a Fender Twin Reverb, or a Fender Hot Rod. And, you forgot to say a budget.

i don't really have a set budget. If i decide on something i want I can get it. I haven't really found a clean amp I'm in love with either. I like the twin, but I still want more customization options.
