Every year I do an Oscar thread (and every year no one gives a hot gay shit), but I'm not going to break tradition because of people who would rather watch a street-dancing movie or an inspirational sports movie.

What do you think of the nominations and who are you rooting for?

Nominations are:

Best Picture
Milk
Slumdog Millionaire
The Reader
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Frost/Nixon

Best Actor
Brad Pitt (Curious Case of Benjamin Button)
Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler)
Sean Penn (Milk
Richard Jenkins (The Visitor)
Frank Langhella (Frost/Nixon)

Best Actress
Anne Hatthaway (Racheal Getting Married)
Meryl Streep (Doubt)
Angelina Jolie (Changeling)
Kate Winslet (The Reader)
Melissa Jo (Frozen River)

Best Supporting Actor
Josh Brolin (Milk)
Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight)
Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road)
Phillip Seymour Hoffman (Doubt)
Robert Downey Jr. (Tropic Thunder)

Best Supporting Actress
Amy Adams (Doubt)
Penelope Cruz (Vicky Cristina Barcelona)
Viola Davis (Doubt)
Taraji P. Henson (Curious Case of Benjamin Button)
Marissa Tomei (The Wrestler)

I've seen all of the Oscar contenders this year (except for Frozen River), and my personal favorites and whom I'm hoping for this year are:

Best Actor - Mickey Rourke, followed closely by Richard Jenkins
Best Supporting Actor - Heath Ledger, followed closely by Josh Brolin
Best Actress - Anne Hathaway (Racheal Getting Married was so underrated)
Best Supporting Actress - Penelope Cruz, followed by Marissa Tomei

Thoughts? Picks?
Poor advice.

I've just realized that I need to watch more films. I haven't seen most of the films and actors to even express my opinion. But I know for sure who will win best supporting actor.

I've only seen Slumdog out of the Best Picture list.

I need to get out to the cinema more often. Slumdog was fantastic, though.

Apparently The Reader was a pile of ****e.

I'm not really sure why Dark Knight is in there...

Sure, Ledger played a good role, but in comparison to his other work, it wasn't that great. Plus Bail's acting was a load of steamy balls in that picture. The film lasted way too long and didn;t really achieve anything.

It was fun to watch, but I'm not going out of my way to see it again.

Yeah, I know. I just wanted to comment on The Dark Knight.

Hrmph...

As for Ledger, I just don't think it was an oscar-worthy perfromance... Maybe I'm wrong.

Ledger's performance was definitely oscar-worthy.

I want Milk to win best picture, but I know Slumdog will. I think Mickey Rourke should win best actor and Anne Hathaway should get best actress (although I didn't actually think Rachel Getting Married was a great film).
#15
I haven't seen very many of the movies to be honest, but here are the ones I think will win (not my personal favorites, but my predictions).

Best Picture
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Best Actor
Sean Penn (Milk)

Best Actress
Meryl Streep (Doubt)

Best Supporting Actor
Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight)

Best Supporting Actress
Marissa Tomei (The Wrestler)

I never really thought Heath was a great actor until he played the Joker, I've seen a few of his films and his performances just wasn't impressive, I don't whether you're just trying to be controversial and say that it didn't achieve anything but I think it was much more than fun to watch, it has all the fundamental qualities a great film has and the casting is brilliant.

i really enjoyed benjamin button, but i'm not sure it's worthy of 13 oscar nominations - however, i suppose it's all in comparison to the competition

i am yet to see slumdog millionaire, but have heard great things about it

EDIT: also, dark knight = overrated, ledger included

oh and wall-e for best animation. hell, if it was up to me, best film!

also, thomas newman deserves to win this year for wall-e. 8 times and no win yet!

Frost/Nixon for best film.

Surprised that the guy who played David Frost (Michael Sheen his name I think) isn't up for Best Actor or Best Supporting Actor.

So I hope Mickey Rourke wins and Robert Downey Jr for kicks.

i haven't watched most of the movies in the best pictures list. i should, but i didn't and that's probably because the movies don't really interest me.

Yes, I am aware of that.

But the films in contention are from 2008.

If we're being picky it's the 81st Annual Academy Awards, but we're not. So 2008 or 2009 Oscars is fine.

Is there anyone else who can't stop thinking about Karl Pilkington whenever they hear about Benjamin Button?

I saw the reader and thought it was pretty good, I dunno whether it's Oscar worthy though. I guess the episode of Extras with Kate Winslet was pretty true ha!
