Ok, so an a-b box goes from, say, 1 amp to another.

What is an A-B-Y box?

No, they can work both ways, assuming there's not buffer. It's just a switch and some wiring, there's nothing in there that wouldn't work in either direction. Although I can't imagine anyone using an A/B/Y for two guitars, and A/B would work fine.
