I love the look of a violin bass, so I was thinking, could I make a violin guitar? I would probably have to custom build the body, as violn bodies are too small. Just a thought. What are peoples opinions, what wood should I use, etc?

I think ibanez makes one or used to if you just want one like that without making it yourself.

That was custom made for PG. That suit is the bee's knees.

Ah nevermind I lied I thought I saw a violin guitar before. And the suit is badass.

I was thinking about using a solid piece of wood in the middle and two wings, similair to the Ric 650d, but I'm not sure how that would work out.

Sounds pretty cool. I think violins have spruce tops, with flamed maple sides/back. But don't quote me on that.

Do you want it just shaped like a violin or be able to play it like a violin. To play it like one the bridge needs a really high arch to it so you can hit 1 string at a time. Which also means a small radius on the fret board.

the one in the pic with PG looks like a solid body, that would be a lot easier to build.

That was not custom made for him, it was one of his signature models. The PGM700, to be exact. They're currently having a contest on the Ibanez website to choose which of Paul Gilbert's signature models to reissue. Vote for it if you want.
