I don't mean to flame Les Paul's but when I think metal I think a Flying V or an X-Plorer, even a Stratocaster. But when I think Les Paul I think rock and pop-rock.

Just sharing my thoughts.

Didn't know if I should stick this in the metal section or not.

Thanks for the feedback.

I think of a Randy Rhoads as Metal, not a Flying V... or a strat...
But a Les Paul gives a heavy tone, so why not?

I believe in the "personal opinion" school of thought, I doubt you've heard of it. Now, go waste your time on something that doesn't annoy me

stratocaster for metal? lol a les paul has a much heavier tone than a strat.
mahogany/maple + humbuckers is pretty much what metal guitars are, les pauls are just a different shape

Iron Maiden?

This.

It's the guitarist that makes a guitar "metal", not the guitar itself. Sure some come equipped with active pickups for higher output, but you can still play pop-punk with it.

yeah... randy rhoades played a les paul. tony iommi played an SG. the dudes in iron maiden play strats. slash was a bit metal and he played les pauls.

for metal, as with anything, it's more about the player, not what guitar they use.

Since some kid in a garage somewhere with a Marshall and a Les Paul cranked his preamp by brushing his arm against it's knob, played an E and realized it sounded good He continued this, eventually the tone passing through people to Tony Iommi, who did the same with his SG. Over time this became more mainstream with Les Pauls due to a darker tone, but I still credit the experimenting garage rocker overheard by someone famous.

Les Pauls have always been metal guitars, they have a really thick dark tone, which is perfect for most types of metal/.

Maybe you should look less at guitars and listen to the actual music. Look at Ted Nugent, he played a hollow body for his metalz.

tbh, i never saw little tiny weak Kirk playing a heavy mofo guitar like a les paul. Always saw him with Flying V's or superstrats.

EMG's sound mostly the same no matter what kind of guitar you're using

I think it because most 'big' metal bands are heavily endorsed by Gibson and other tend to follow a trend

You can play metal on a Telecaster if you wanted to. It doesn't matter, it's just what the guitar player prefers to use.

*Waits for wintersun fanboys*

But yeah, Les Pauls have a thick heavy sound that suit many guitarists... even if they don't look as br00talz as a Jackson or an Ibanez or whatever.
