Well UG, it's that time of year again. Time for booze, beads, and Bourbon Street in the great city of New Orleans. That's right, it's Carnival 2009, or as you non-locals more commonly refer to it, Mardi Gras.

(Krewe of Rex, circa 1900s)

(Krewe of Rex, circa present. One of the many iconic floats in Rex)

The season officially kicked off Friday (I'm pretty sure...) with Fat Tuesday itself being on the 24th.

Mardi Gras is a time where the city can really shine with its great heritage, rich history, and numerous traditions.

It's a big deal for people down here, especially the die-hards. To some people, it's a pain in the ass that makes bad traffic and obnoxious poeple. To others, it's the greatest thing in the world.

I'm sure some UGers have been down here for Mardi Gras before.
Anybody have any stories?
Anybody coming down here this year for their first Carnival?
Anybody have no idea what the hell Mardi Gras is?
Anybody coming down this year that has any questions?
I'll answer them to the best of my abilities along with any other locals that want to contribute.

Just wanted the rest of the world to see NOLA in the spotlight.

My birthday is on Fat Tuesday....

Lucky... My birthday was on Lundi Gras...

EDIT: My actual birth date, not this year. It'll be a long time before it falls on Lundi Gras again.
