There is a certain tone that sounds like a growl on the strings (particularly lower ones) in the distorted tube amp playing of Eric Clapton and George Harrison's playing in 'Happiness is a Warm Gun'

Examples:

Eric Clapton:

(throughout Clapton's playing, not Lennon's.)

throughout Crossroads

Clearly on White Room as well

George Harrison on the bridge of Happiness is a Warm Gun at about :46 to about :59

Any tips to get this tone? You can mess with treble, mid, bass, presence, guitar volume and tone controls. All on a 2 pickup humbucker guitar.
