The best are made by Soldano.

But if you have to ask what Soldano is, you can't afford it.

That list is **** if it doesn't include any SLO's or Hot Rods.

Seriously, once you play a soldano you'll never want to touch a solid state amp ever again. I've had a Lucky 13 for a while now, and I just went up to his workshop on Friday and it was amp heaven.

Take a look at my edit. I forgot about Soldanos. Actually, that list is just my copied/edited GAS list.

I don't think the Alchemist can handle Chimera type metal...then again, this is going off of hearsay. I havent played an Alchemist, though I really want to.

But yea, budget is pretty important when it comes to looking for high gain heads. Most of the ones listed so far are between $1200 and $3000 US....
Gibson Les Paul Studio
Highway One Telecaster

Mesa F-50

I played one, was allowed to crank it (the combo) and it couldn't really do Chimera type metal, of course I was only playing it through a guitar with passive pickups *stock epiphone* so the output couldn't be that great.
Can we erase the past?

Gear:

Mesa Boogie Mini Rec 25
Mesa Boogie Rectifier 2x12 cab

Jackson DK2, DK2M, DKMGT, SLAT3-7, DK1

Bah, if an amp can't get "metal" enough for me with passive pickups I don't consider it a metal amp. The Alchemist just doesn't seem like it is voiced for modern metal.
Gibson Les Paul Studio
Highway One Telecaster
Dean Evo
Mesa F-50
Laney GH50L
Vox AC30 C2

A good cheap one would be a Peavey 5150 or if you want to spend a little more, I'd recommend the Mesa Dual or Triple Rectifier, or an ENGL Fireball or a Soldano SLO100
Gear List:
'97 Gibson Explorer w/ Duncan SH-4 and SH-2
Fender Jazz Bass 'Crafted in Japan'
Yamaha Acoustic Guitar
Vox AD30VT w/ VFS2
Roland Cube 30 Bass
Modded "St. Louis" Wah
Dunlop .88 Tortex picks
#18
Marshall MG. Fo' sho.

But seriously, look at WTF's list, that pretty much covers it. Plus if you don't he might get a complex.

i thought it could handle most types of metal, even with the passives i used, but then again im not the kind of guy who uses a lot of gain.

Head and Cab for $130? You don't need a head and cabinet, you need a psychological examination.

I use wide ranges of gain, so I could probably see myself buying this amp if I like it, but then again, I also said I haven't tried it. So for all I know it may have enough gain for "my" metal tones, but not enough for the TS's, anyway,

IMHO without the depth mod, the soldano is a whiny POS....and I disagree on the best.

Personally, for British flavour, I prefer Mako, Splawn, or Peters, POSSIBLY even BatCat and some Riveras

For an american voicing, i prefer Boogie

Again, thats just my preference
I've bought, sold, and traded more gear than I care to admit.

LOL, i could`ve bought one of those, i think it was the F-50 but it was a combo 1X12 i passed it up for the amp in my sig.

Marshall all the way.

The lists on the first page look good. The only thing I would add would be Randall. Some of their amp heads are high-gain monsters. Their cabs are usually subpar though...I would go with a Mesa or Avatar.
#30
Only one amp you will EVER need.

That would be the Peavey 5150.

Endless amounts of gain, and that middy metal ****ing bark for MILES.. What I did when I first got my 5150, I said to my buddy; Hey, Mike.. Watch this. I can turn all of the knobs randomly and still get a good tone.

I still can.
