Well, me and my band want to learn "Unchained" by Van Halen - please tell me you knew that - and I need to learn how he does the flanger thing in the intro. What does he use for settings? Does he just...click it on and off or something?

He clicks it on after the intro, but nor for the whole guitar line. He uses it in between those chords when he's chugging the D. Just listen to the recording and figure it out.
Gear List:

Fender Jazz Bass 'Crafted in Japan'
Yamaha Acoustic Guitar
Vox AD30VT w/ VFS2
Roland Cube 30 Bass

Dunlop .88 Tortex picks

He only uses it when he palm mutes the low E, listen to the recording. Also, he never used the flanger live back in the day he only does so now cause of endorsements of course. Here's a great live recording of it during their '81 tour

but if you're looking for settings

Also something I found interesting a year or so ago is that I think Dunlop/MXR actually advertises Ed's settings in their ads. Check out this picture, its pretty much exactly how it should be as the settings above from that site didn't quite work for me but those did a lot better.

It's actually a phaser placed before the distortion, and its on the whole time; you just can't hear it very well except when he's doing the chugg parts.

No, its a flanger. Ed used his Phase 90 a lot for solos and such and even during rhythm parts but when he's chugging thats a flanger. You are correct though in that if you have a distortion pedal for example place the Phase 90 before it not after like some suggest.

^ Yeah I actually listened to the song after I posted that and I definitely agree with you.

It would be kind of impractical to be turning a flanger on and off like that while playing live; like you said, Eddie didn't use it live anyways.

Yea when you watch that video I posted earlier he doesn't use it nor did he use it at anytime live during the Fair Warning tour from what I've heard, so technically you don't even need one to play the song. He did use it on their 2007/08 tour but thats cause of endorsements. Which always makes me wonder, when did Ed become Gene Simmons??
