Only pick one from each please

I want a 1st but I am averaging grades in the mid-60s now so will probably get a 2.1 unless I get my act together.

These grades are only the way it's done in the uk.

The way it works is if you get over 70% overall, that's a first.

60%-70% is a 2.1

50% is a... well I don't know, not to sound arrogant but I never bothered to look at that. But you get the idea about how it works.

getting a '1st' is the best you can get.

Over 70 percent is a "first?" A 70 percent in a class is barely passing here, actually I'm not sure if that is considered a passing grade.

Our courses are condensed into 3 years and therefore harder.
I think.

Also it may depend on the course/institution. Those are the boundries for studying Linguistics and English language BA at UWE, because that's a crazy hard course. It may be different elsewhere, I know some grading systems go up to 100.

Want a 1st , but expect to get a 2:1. However, only in my first year, so you never know.

I'm fairly sure that those boundaries are universal, but there may be added requirements for individual course elements, for example a friend of mine doing Pharmacy has, for obvious reasons, to get over 80% in all maths-based exams to pass those elements, but still need 70% overall for a first.

On my course (English), although 100% is technically possible, the mark scheme specifies that essays must be pretty much publication standard to get over 90, in both originality and quality...which no essay produced under exam conditions is ever going to be.

So you get a degree after 3 years?

Usually it's four years for a BA here, but you can get them earlier than that if you can handle a busy schedule.

My grading scale differs from class to class but generally you get an A+ (highest grade possible for 98-100 percent in the class, A for 94-96 percent, A- for 91-93 percent.

B+ for 88-90, etc.

I just got my results for the first semester of my 3rd year, and i'm on a 2:1, and I pretty much expect to get one too, though moving up to a first would be nice. I know american grades are a little different, it always confuses the american students on my course, they do seem to think its a lot harder over here exam wise at least, i know you guys get a Bachelors in 4 years, but i'll have my masters in 4 years, its a bit of a more intense program i guess

My uni uses GPA and the traditional system so here's a converter for you yanks

2006/2007 Honours Classification

Honour Weighted GPA
1st Class 3.68 and above
2.1 3.08 to 3.67 inclusive
2.2 2.48 to 3.07 inclusive
Pass 2.00 to 2.47 inclusive

I'm en route to a first but I'm only in firs year yet. I'd like to get a first if I can. I need to get at least a 2.1 though or I'm fecked.

I was on a first for a while but recent exams gave brought that down to a 2.1.

I might be able to get a first but realistically, Im looking at a 2.1

the American education system is easier, that's why

up here it's a D- to D+ for 50-60, C- to C+ for 60-70, B- to B+ for a 70-80, and A- to A+ for an 80-100

I don't understand why people are voting for things other than 1st.
You may not be on line for achieving it, but why would you aim for anything other than the highest?
#29
Realistically, I'm after a 2:1, but I appear to be slacking quite badly at the moment, so a 2:2 may be on the cards. After nearly 4 yrs I'm looking forward to graduating, but I also love the student lifestyle...

On the plus side, I'm getting an undergrad MA, so if I ever go to the states they will most likely think its a post grad degree because of the different systems.

well, i look at it realistically - i knock around the 2.1, 2.2 area, so i would be chuffed with a 2.1

a first hasn't really entered my expectations lol - however, in saying that, i am only in my first year which doesn't contribute to the overall grade, so effort will be higher next year when it counts!

EDIT: what is this MA you speak of? Masters? my course is 5 years, with 4th year being work experience and 5th being masters.

how are masters graded? same?

Yeah. But usually you get a BA, but like GHJ was saying he'll get an undergrad MA, which you get at glasgow, edinburgh, st andrews, aberdeen, oxford and Cambridge (I think).

so i plan to get it and just say 'masters' and trick employers. lol

I do see your point, aiming for a first would be good, but i'm just being realistic, i'm doing an MEng in mechanical engineering, which is pretty specialised and pretty hard if I do say so myself, very high drop out rate, so just getting a 2:1 would be great, but I would still love a first really.

I want a First, am sitting between a 2.1 and a First just now, and am in my Third year. Being in Scotland, that means I still have another 18 months since I'll be doing my Honours year. (For non-Scots, that's a final year where you produce a research project/dissertation for publication as well as normal classes)

If I get my First I'll hopefully be moving onto Phd, Or at the least a Masters then a Phd if the route can't be straight onwards. All depends on that Research Project being to Professional standards really.
