When talking about metal influences, a guy in a forum said:
At The Gates - Anything with that generic gothenburg chord progression (thats probably like 15,000 bands)

So what is that progression ?

I've noticed that in the majority of Gothenburg metal, the most prominent chords are I and VI. So in E minor that would be Em and C. Also lots of chord V (in E harmonic minor, that would be a B chord).

EDIT: The chord I and VI thing can be traced quite clearly back to Iron Maiden. Also, forgive my generalisation, I haven't yet dug too deep into the world of melodeath.

As korina said, but in lamen's terms:

LowE {-0-3-5-0-3-8-}

But with pedal point riffing.

I've been playing guitar for almost 6 years now and I still have no idea what the hell pedal riffs are.

Also, like WaveCaster said, it's just the general rhythmic progression you hear in most Gothenberg melodeath bands, most of them do sound pretty similar.

Pedal point=bass voice in the rhythm holding a chord that's initially consonant with the riffing, but is still held while the riffing moves outside of that scale, so the pedal note (the bass note) becomes dissonant.

Is a pedal point not just a bass note that's repeated? *consults musical revision guide that is lying on desk*

"A note which is held on or is repeated continuosly in the bass beneath changing harmonies. Very often the note will be the tonic (tonic pedal) or the dominant (dominant pedal)."

The point of underground bands is their not popular or famous most of the time. Thus there is a good chance they suck.

Hmmmm all these people who don't know what pedal point obviously never listened to much of Bach's stuff. =D
I am me. Live with it.

Ohhh that's cool; I remember something similar to that from piano...

*shrug*

I thought it interesting, thanks for the explanation.

At no point on any of the Bach cd's I own were the words 'pedal point' uttered.

Johann Sebastian Bach.

Lol, Daniel (Dead-rip), i think you might be confusing 'pedal-point' with counterpoint harmonies which Bach used to the extreme.
