so i finished my painting in art class very early. i have a bunch of free time in there to do whatever i want, so i decided to paint one of my guitars. its an old hondo from the 80's that i thought was butt ugly because it was finished natural. i decided i would hand paint a design on there with acrylics then clear the hell out of it so they dont come off.

this is what it originally looked like:

so far i put some of this clear temporarily sticky stuff and cut out a design with an exacto knife, then i masked off the sides.

oh and did i mention the background is gonna be splatter?

here's a picture of where i am now (theres a design under all this, its just not dry enough to peel off yet):

sorry for the crappy phone pic but im doing it in school and its all i got.

your the man jim.

and by the way, my thinking is all the paint can be sanded off and i can throw some clear on it and it'll be the same thing. its not like i sanded off a custom paintjob or something

its an improvement definitely, the 80's brown does looedk like erik estrada came and took a **** on your guitar. I'd be interested to see what it looks like after you peel off the design

You know, I hadn't thought of that.

But still, it'll never sound quite the same, though.

this wasn't really a tone machine in the first place, if i do go back to the natural look i plan on doing an oil finish so it might be better off then before

it looked better before
it could've looked really cool if it was all white and with Red splashes instead of a zillion color.
would look more bloody lol

i didn't want to make it look bloody, because i'm not into that kind of stereotypical metal stuff. i wanted to make it more bright and 80's hair metal looking with a twist of clown jizz

I think it's kind of cool. Something different anyway.

But then again I have unnatural and conflicting loves of odd airbrush work and natural finishes. I say strip half of it and leave the other half painted!

Don't really like the motifs, and those splatters would have looked better on black IMO. Credit for doing something a bit different, anyway.
#31
Not too keen on the blue on the front, but the rest of it definitely looks awesome. I have an 80's Hondo and they aren't exactly known for good tone, so you haven't really lost anything by trying the paintjob. Great job I think.
#32
What does it look like with the hardware?

Credit for experimentation but I'm not sure I like the overall effect though. The swirls/vines/branches look good (just not with the busyness of the background).

What about sanding back and then doing the stenciling again but in reverse (i.e. have natural wood with black swirls)? Makes it a bit different but still keeps the laminate detailing etc.

i havent put the hardware/neck on yet cuz the clear is still drying. im probably gonna do natural with a black burst or just an oil finish

...yes...very different...but different for differences sake is foolish. The "trucker mud flap chicks" in blue just kinda ruined it. I could appreciate it without them, but knowing the connotation of the silhouettes...
#35
Looks pretty cool, but i think you should have gone either the girls or the tree, not both

I liked it natural the most...

the splatters with no design on top would have been cool, too. all sprinkled-donut looking.

I dont really like it how it is now, sorry

sanding it down and giving it a natural finish, or sanding it down and re-doing the splatters would be cool, though.
#37
Seems sloppy. I guess I'd have to see it all assembled, but it doesn't look well done.
