so ive seen a couple bands with those big construction lights that flash with the music. is there something you buy that makes them do that? if so what is it?

They are special lights that react to the microphone usually on the bass drum in a live setting. I can't think of what they are called. Look at a DJ supply store or anywhere that sells lighting for live performance.

It's a certain type of light, my friend uses them when he puts gigs on for bands but I don't know what they're called. Usually, they're activated by stamping on the stage or clapping your hands.

You could also be talking about bog standard overhead lights that are operated remotely by lighting technicians. All you do then is connect them to a computer, and click on a button to set them flashing, and all the other options. Total freedom really. However, the band can't control these for obvious reasons.

it's kinda like an eq in a sense, i think i know what you mean, but they have the lights set to light up for different frequencies. this house near mine has their christmas lights hooked up to a similar device. i'm not sure what the exact equipment is but it runs through depending on the frequency of the sound.

offhand i dont but i'm sure, in fact no i'm positive, that a google search will bring up how to's and maybe an instructable or two. those arduino boards can do a lot of different things (even seen one used as a pedal) so it's just a matter of searching and in the process of searching you should have no problem finding info on how it works and a tutorial or twelve on how to control it.
