I recently read a column in a guitar magazine about field coil speakers being used to regulate the volume without attenuating. I think this would be an interesting project to modify permanent magnet speakers into field coil speakers. If I do this will the impedance of the speaker change? And any suggestions or tips are welcome.

I looked into building one from scratch before. A lot of work though. It will change the sound though. And good luck on modifying the permanent magnet to work, you would need to completely degauss it. You would probably be better off scrapping it and salvaging the cone/basket and spider.
