i broke the volume knob on my amp and i thought of a great idea.
build a guitar pedal that controls the volume
it would be a box with a volume nob (their like 3 bucks) and in /output jacks
would that work and has anyone done it before

Its not going to cut down your amp for gods sakes. Its going to cut the signal going into your amp, just like the volume knob on your guitar. For the knob to control the amp, it actually has to be wired to the amp.

I think a wah pedal type volume pedal is what he had in mind? Although I think those already exist too...either way it would be a fun project.

TS.

The pedal you are describing wont have any effect on the volume settings of the amp. All it is going to do, is cut or boost the signal going into it. To build what you are suggesting would involve breaking into the amp, and wiring the pedal up to the wiring in the original volume knob, and it would not require your instrument to be hooked up. Odds are, it is quite possible, but it would be much easier to just replace/fix the original volume knob.

Like some people have already said, "volume pedals" can be bought from most large Guitar shops, Definitely Guitar centre if you are in the US, just dont expect it to modify the volume of the actual amp.

If you really are intent upon continuing with this, we have a specific forum for this kind of subject. Gear Building and Customising

Just start a thread in there and some of the regualrs should get back to you with their advice.
