and don't say 1 or -1.

What is the biggest difference between 7 strings and six strings in PLAYABILITY, fretting TECHNIQUE and overall SOUND of the guitars?

Just curious as to how it is like.

i played a 7 string at my local shop and i was so confused by it. It was like an ocean of strings across the fretboard.

But im sure if you got used to that it would be a blast to play.

quality pickups are a must though to make sure you get that huge low-end. The schecter i played was ****, no power at all. And i was playing through a pretty good amp.

Its the same, accept for the extra width on the neck and the low b string
Ibanez Jem 777BK, Carvin DC727, Fender MIM Strat
Mesa Boogie DC5
Xotic BB Preamp, Ts9, BBE GS, Boss DD-6
Weber Mass
Morley Bad Horsie 2

It's pretty much the same as playing a 6 string once you get used to it, and it's a lot of fun. As for sound, that depends on what kind of guitar you're playing. I think Schecter makes the best 7 strings.
Gear:
PRS SE Singlecut, blue with stoptail (my baby)
Line 6 Spider III 75 (shut up)
Epiphone Les Paul standard
Cheapo Yamaha nylon string
even more cheapo Fender steel string acoustic

Eh, I expected more people to say like 'omg playing chords is crazy different' or there is some completely different theory to playing lead on it like you would on alternate tunings.

The necks are obviously wider so that could possibly be a problem if you have really small hands. As for sound I find the 7th string nice for really heavy riffing. I'm basically stating the obvious.

Edit: It's pretty much exactly the same except one more string.

Yes I do have fairly small hands, but that is beside the point, I can live.

I thought 7 strings were set up Eadgbbe. Am I missing something on that post?

That's a really random and pointless tuning. Where did you see that?

EDIT: OIC, you got confused which B...

It was standard tuning on some guitars I checked out more toward the metal section of my local GC. I tend to stay toward PRS gibson and Gretch but I felt adventurous. I picked it up and noticed the 2 and 3 strings were the same pitch. IIRC I breifly played a few Scheters and an Ibanez.

in terms of playability the main noticable difference is in playing chords, power chords aren't too bad, but open chords can be pretty tricky if you aren't used to it.

Main differences:

- Extra string
- Wider neck, usually also thicker
- More tension on floating bridge (if it has one)
- Less pickup choice

Pretty much sums it up.

I once tuned my 7 string EADGBEA..... You can get some really high notes! Kinda rough on strings though
I love all 5 (sold a couple) of my Carvin X-100b's.
