OD works by lightly clipping your signal to emulate the breakup of a tube amp. Distortion clips your signal heavily to pull out some more...well, distorted tones.

For $60, you aren't going to get a really good distortion pedal, unless you go used.

Don't judge me.

the only 3 "distortion" pedals i like are the line 6 uber metal, tonebone hot british or krank distortus maximus.
but i prefer to us the dirty channel on my tube amp with a good overdrive pedal to boost it

used metal muff

yeah those are good too, but a bit too fuzzy on most settings

& too noisy, and too buzzy, and too wuzzy...

you get the point.
ideally, you'd get a tech 21 sansamp.

you won't get a distortion pedal for 60 bucks, period. for less than 200 you can get several. for what you described you would need to look at Tech21's SansAmp British pedal. 149 bucks, but for 60 bucks there isn't a distortion pedal that isn't crap

The Tech 21 isn't in his budget...even if he goes used...

EDIT: beaten to it ^
and I've never had problems getting a fuzzy sound out of mine...get the one with the top boost too

try a zoom digital processor. Friend has a G2, quite good, comes with a pedal for dynamic delay/flange/distortion. Has 40 slots for different setups, plus two pedals for cycling through them. Can use a total of nine effects at once.

er, no. a DS1 would be better.

yeah those zoom pedals are junk. I would stay away from the DS1 unless you plan on modding it.

If you're going to buy a MFX pedal, it might as well be a good one, and Zooms are not.

They're cheaply made, unreliable, overly digital, and uninspiring.

EDIT:

I don't, and that's exactly my point.

+1

They sound like effects on computer software...thin, and VERY digital sounding
