So I was surfing the internet when I came upon this:

And this left me with one burning question: what is the purpose of having a one-string bass?

You laugh now, but after basses with only a volume knob, this is the next "logical" step.

You want one. Other than that, I have no idea.

I believe this was a "Because I can" build. If so, the bass has no purpose.

Important question!

Two-stringed basses, I can imagine. But not one.

I'm not sure exactly, but everything the band plays is in the key of A.

if you notice its a 4 with all the other hardware taken off....maybe its just broken, and not a one string bass.

my guess would be A since its a 4-string bass that has had every string but the A removed. but thats a good question

Good theory, but this disproves it:

its aboviously A, because its the A string he left on, not like he left on the E or D or some crap, plus what someone else said "all their songs are in the key of A
Try adding more delay.

Lol, I dont blame you. The "" was supposed to symbolize my confusion as well.

Tried to find an explanation/interview, this all I could find:
J.T. USES A ONE STRING-BASS. HOW IS IT POSSIBLE TO CREATE SUCH AN INTENSE SOUND WITH JUST ONE STRING?

That’s the mastery of Jaska and Hiili working together with sound… I’m not sure exactly, but he uses a Big Muff –pedal on it… And of course the whole bass has its own unique & horrible sound to it!

Youd think the first question would be WHY?!

I would ask what he did with the other 3/4 of the hardware

Maybe he strung it where the A goes to counteract any intonation issues.

If it is a "Drop" band, or a stagnant key, he could easily play along with one string (look up those crappy drop songs that are just on one string anyway (00070080087500)

He probably grabs his 2 string for more complex passages.

There have been many bass players who used 2 string basses. The first one I thought of when I saw this thread was Mark Sandman of Morphine. He could do some impressive solos using a slide.

I currently have a one stringed bass, it was only strung up for a quick recording as its fretless and I needed a nice bass slide. On a more serious note, maybe it's a good thing to practice with one string? If you can groove with one string, think of the ease and wider range of tones you can acheive with another 3/4/5. Kinda similiar to a great bass lesson I seen on Youtube from the guy who used to write in Guitar World magazine, bald fellow, has loads of videos testing basses on Youtube, his name escapes me at the moment. Anyway, he done a lesson called "Making a song with one note", and he bloody rocked it with just an E (obviously involving different octaves for variety).
