i apologize if this isn't the most appropriate thread first of all.

i live in aus. i was just looking at Guitar centre's website particularly at a metal muff. it is listed for $99USD which converts to about $155AUD (google converter) although in my local store the metal muff costs $295AUD which equals roughly $186USD.

The price in aus for a metal muff seems ridiculous ?? is this the case with guitars aswell ... specifically gibson and fender's USA factories.

Also is a maton overpriced in usa seeing as its made in aus ??

the only example i can remember off the top of my head is EMGs cost $400 in Aus compared to the $200 we'd pay here. so yeah, i'd say they suffer a bit of an inflated price.

Damn straight. QLD Maple is my favourite acoustic guitar wood.

Also, TS, products are taxed when they're imported, as well as the price of the actual travel etc. I don't think it's so much to equal that much inflation in price, but it explains some of it. I think they also capitalise because you can't really buy them from anywhere else. The best way is to buy on eBay or the like for pedals, amps etc. after trying them out here. The price usually ends up cheaper after paying for shipping. Also, don't buy guitars without playing that exact guitar, not even the same model, because all guitars differ and the one you get may not be as good.

The cost to transport the stuff wont be worth it... It cost my uncle $250 to get a mini PA thing shipped over, it weighs less than an average tube amp head.

Yea, I've noticed store prices in New Zealand are even better than those in Australia, which is really weird (that's taking the currency difference into account, but still).

I buy all of my gear on eBay from American stores.

I've saved about $2,000 in the past 2 years alone.

Even with an outrageous shipping price, i still saved $400 AUD on my last bass (Cort Curbow 4)

It really depends on the seller. Some people charge extra on top of the actual shipping prices. I've seen body blanks on ebay with $300 shipping (3 times the price of the actual wood!) But I'm about to buy a neck blank for a neckthru guitar and a body blank, and the guy only charges actual shipping costs, so its $110.

Guitars wouldn't be so bad, they're fairly light, but amps and stuff.. D=

Also, hows the cort play? I've got a cort guitar, and I've seen lots of people playing cort basses... Is cort starting to become popular or something now.

I've always liked the stuff that Cort makes. For the quality, they are very cheap. They seem to be one of the few companies that makes quality instruments for a cheap price.

Not sure whether it's becoming popular or not. I know of a few people who use Cort's - for the same reason that I do - I just dont have the money to spend on guitars that I want to.

If I had the 4,000 to buy a Rickenbacker, believe me, I would.

You thiink it is bad in your country, come to Iceland! (We are ging through a economic disaster)

I recently ordered a ESP FR-II Horizon Lefty.

In october 2008 it was about 130.000 Icelandic króna, now I am paying 230.000 Icelandic króna But I am okey with it, because our economy will only get worse in the next two years or so and I need a new, better guitar.

Try the ****ing string prices *shudders*

and the the bass string prices......

I think with guitar strings we are paying double and with bass strings triple.

My last set of guitar strings cost me $17 and my last set of bass strings were $100 (i play 5's) and both were EB's

admittedly i think prices on bass strings at the only local store have relaxed a little. That and the cheapest i ever got the two were $9 for guitar and $75 for bass...
