Normally its folk metal with viking themed lyrics, but the term applies to all almost all metal with viking themed lyrics.

Its not a real genre though ,just a lyrically based one such as Pirate Metal.

Most every metalhead knows what viking metal is... even if they don't like it.

Legend is the best Viking Metal band... Mostly because unlike most Viking Metal bands they actually do have a distinct sound to them. Any disagreement will result in kastration of the nekrotic variety.

Or because Legend actually brought Odin to the world of metal. I'm glad my wh0ring of Legend got them some attention on here

"Our ships are gliding through the night
Their shores are now in sight
The riches that they now possess
Will fall to Odin's might "

Oh yeah.

Ensiferum isn't viking metal. Vikings don't come from Finland, Ensiferum does. But you gotta listen to viking metal and Ensiferum cause they both ****ing rule!

Doesn't matter in the least where the band is from.

I found a Viking Metal band from Mexico once, but I couldn't be damned to remember the name of them...

Alright. Ensiferum is a folk metal band with melodic death and some power metal influences. Viking metal is a bit of a subgenre of folk metal in which there is more of a viking beat, and viking themes. Both folk and viking metal are commonly tied in with progressive black metal, such as bands like Einherjer and Borknagar. Bands like Amon Amarth have tied viking metal (mostly their older stuff) with melodic death metal. A lot of people disregard that they're viking metal due to the fact that they don't follow traditional folk metal influence or sound, however, viking metal has become such a loose term to really define it. However, not every folk/viking metal band sticks to heathen, war, viking, adventurous, or any of that sort of lyrical thematic. Some bands like Vintersorg use other themes, such as the cosmos, and Borknagar tends to use philosophy. Most folk/viking/progressive black metal bands are pretty distinct from one another, which makes the genre very diverse. Wintersun takes a more melodic death/black approach with lyrics about life and death using a mix of shriek and clean vocals, while bands like Battlelore use heathen folk themed lyrics with mostly clean female vocals. You can't really SUGGEST a folk/viking metal band, because to me, unlike many bands in other genres, every one of them has a unique sound.
#23
...what? So you're basically saying that the genre viking metal is, in fact, not a genre. Which it really isn't. Vaguely folk inspired viking obsessed black metal, and power metal "with harsh vocals" are so not the same genre no matter how you slice it (except for both being metal, but that doesn't count). And what's viking about Vintersorg singing about gravitational lensing? His old stuff, sure, but the purely proggy metaphysical cosmic stuff... surely not.

i've always found pop to be harder to play than metal... especially shred metal... it's just really fast tremolo picking and the occasional palm mute... and the only chords you have to worry about are power chords...

Ramseus, I NEVER STATED that Vintersorg is a viking metal band. Please read my post before your assumptions fly off like that. And Viking Metal does indeed derive off both Folk Metal and Black Metal, if not more off of Folk Metal. My post cleared up the various roots of Folk and Viking Metal, defining what makes each other, and how they tie into one another.

False, Legend were around before Folk or Black Metal.

If I had to take a guess I'm picturing some one like Hammerfall (power metal, pretty good genre) But with the lyrics themed around norse mythology and the band members wearing pointy helmets, lol

My favorite viking metal bands will always have to be Falkenbach and Einherjer, and no, they don't wear pointy helmets. Hell, I've yet to see any viking metal band wear the generic viking helmets.
#29
Maybe they should start.

That'd definatly give an image for the genre. But what exactly are they like then? Band wise? Are they anything like anyone we know or is it it's own unique type of metal?

They only bands I've heard that I'd actually give the term Viking Metal to are Legend and later era Bathory.

Well, those are the two bands that really brought such lyrics to metal.

No, I mean they're the only bands that actually FEEL like Viking Metal should, most of the other's are either Melodeath or Folk Metal.

Well the Folk/Power Metal band Turisas I believe have used viking metal helmets in some photography (I can't recall). They're not really Viking Metal for their sound, but their lyrics mostly focus on Hungarian Vikings and such.

HAIL TO THA HAMMAHH!!!

Anyways now that I got that out that Tyr rules this scene....

I consider Ensiferum to be folk metal and Amon Amarth and Legend to be Norse Metal...I guess you can call them viking metal but Norse is more specific because it's more to do with Odin, thor blah blah blah. which is norse mythology
