Hello all,

I have narrowed my list for a new floor mounted multi effects unit (having just sold my old Boss GX700 and Digitech Control 8 foot controller) down to the Digitech RP1000 and the Boss GT-10 with an outside chance of including the Vox Tonelab LE.

One thing I found in the RP1000 manual was the following:

Chorus/FX
The Chorus/FX row in the RP1000 is a multi-function module, allowing you to select Effect types such as Chorus, Flanger, Phaser, Vibrato, Rotary Speaker, Tremolo, Panner, Envelope Filter, Detune, Whammy?, Pitch Shift, Detune, Harmony, OC Octaver and more. When the Chorus/FX row is selected, Knob 1 is used to choose the Effect type. Press this knob to turn these Effects on and off. Only one of the effects in this row can be used at a time.

This seems a bit crap, are the same limitations on the other systems mentioned?

The main thing is I am not a gigging guitarist, I only play guitar at home for a hobby, I do really like the RP1000. How limiting will the above lack of feature be for me do you think?
I know tone purists will say "NO" to a multi effects unit but space is a big issue here.

Please view http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYlVayitAXg and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=357Cyeyul68&feature=related

Please tell me which one and most importantly WHY? One thing to bear in mind is that I don't want to spend hours getting my tones so some half decent tones straight outta the box would be good.

Cheers

Phil

I don't think you can direct record with it, also I want a looper, I forgot to mention that. Also I think you have to change banks by hand

I'd stay away from Digitech RPs. They're are supposed t be extremely unreliable, and hard to use.

The best thing you can do for yourself, whether you are just into guitar playing for hobby or professionally is NEVER EVER, EVER, EVER, buy a multi-effects pedal, they suck. You are far better off to buy nice analog pedals, and although it costs more and will take you a longer time to get all the options that an multi-effects pedal has, they sound WAY BETTER. You have to sit down and compare the effect in the muti-pedal with a regualr analog pedal and every time you compare an analog pedal to the muti-effect unit, the Analog pedal will win. I have owned several multi-effects units, and it took me years to learn what I am telling you now... MULTI-EFFECT UNITS ARE JUNK. If you are on a budget but can solder... an excellent option is the Build Your Own Clone effects pedals, you get pedals for between $50-150 that sound like the pedals that sell for $200-500 and often times even better, their using the same high grade parts and often the same circuits. So you could get 5-6 of those for the cost of a decent multi-effects unit, and there ya go... now your rig sounds good, and its way more fun becasue you just made them all yourself. Other brands I would recommend are: MXR (affordable but good quality, and built like a tank), Electro-Harmonix (not always the most durable but a classic company non the less), Maxon, and Emma electronics (really good distortion pedal called the reezafratzits). If you can afford boutique check out, Z-Vex, Throbak, Death-by-Audio, Smart people factory, Prescription Electronics, Keeley, Hao, Fulltone, and Catilinbread. Well i hope you consider analog effects over a multi-effect unit, I'm certain that you won't be disappointed!

Yes, but my GT-8 had two modulation FX at a time with limitations. And tone out of the box with no work is not synonymous with multifx.

Don't get me wrong, I hear what you are saying but I don't have much room, I would get confused with the effects order and I just know I would spend ages trying out different sequences. I would end up with 10 different distortion boxes, 5 chorus pedals, 5 delays, 3 wah's, 2 flangers, 2 phasers, an eq, a volume pedal and god knows what else, then I would not be able to decide what to use, I need to be restricted so for me a multi effect is the way to go. Please take a peek at the youtube vids I mentioned and see what you think. Also I am in the UK and build your own clone don't deliver to me.

Cheers

Do you want/need the amp modeling feature, or are you just looking for effects?

If you want total flexibility for just effects, go with the Line6 M13. You can have 4 simultanous effects at once, footswitchable, and each of the 4 positions can have up to 3 effects defined, which are also footswitchable. And on top of that, you have 12 different "scenes" (presets).

I just picked one up and have been playing around with it, and it's amazing. For just stompbox effects, it's the way to go, and the same price as the other 2 you mentioned (which I also looked into). What you lose compared to the Boss and Digitech are the amp models, but I already have a nice tube amp, so I didn't need/want that anyway.

EDIT - another thing I liked was that if your amp has an effects loop, you can wire up the M13 with the 4 cable method, which allows you to insert your effects either before your amp or as part of your amp's effect loop or both (i.e. first 2 before your amp's preamp, second 2 in the effects loop).
