where ya from exactly?

America:

Musiciansfriend.com
Guitarcentre.com
SamAsh.com

UK:

GAK.co.uk
Gears4Music.co.uk
Soundslive.co.uk

thats off the top of my head. to be honest im not a big fan of starter packages (might just be though, i dont like the amps)

i shall edit my post with some starters after ive dug a bit

EDIT:

SX J and P basses respectively: there are very few other starters for under 150 dollars however SX are fairly solid and good if you just want to start playing bass immediately. there is litle else for under 150 dollars im afraid.

You wont find a package deal for that amount. Anything online is all over $200. Maybe on ebay you could find a practice amp and a bass to start with. Im partial to ibanez so Id say get the bass jump pack on musicians friend. If your serious about learning bass. Spend the extra money and get a decent bass that wont fall apart on you. A lot of beginners get frustrated simply from playing on crappy instruments. Better in the long run to save your pennies and get a decent setup. You must have a local music shop that has used equipment.

Yes, In my oppinion, very.

Most people like there stuff, but some don't. Those people tend to have only played the stuff from a couple years ago.
