Any tubes will work just fine as long as they're the same type, just make sure you bias the amp.

I've had tube amps for a while now, but never actually had any go down on me

maybe you're not saying the right things? an amp likes to know you care.

Mesa Tubes are Garbage! Your paying extra money for Rebrands.

Your better off going to tubedepot or eurotubes for your tubes.
If you start a reply with: I have never played one but I have heard good things about it! Your opinion is invalid.

Mesa Tubes are all rebranded Groove Tubes. Groove tubes are rebranded...other tubes. A nice mix.

Don't do eurotubes. Tube depot is the way to go. Rubys or JJs are probably the way to go as well.
