I've been kinda doing that lately. I've been really into Jimmy Page lately, especially from the time he started using Les Pauls. Because of that I've been really interested in buying a LP even though I've played them before (owned one for a little while then got rid of it) and hated how uncomfortable they are, and hard for me to play. I'm more of a Strat and Tele guy, preferring those guitars or ones based on those designs.

Same goes for Cream-era Clapton, who played an SG, now I'm convinced I must own an SG too!!

Has this happened to you? I mean, have you ever had a hard time convincing yourself that you should only stick to "The One" guitar that's meant for you? Or if not "The One", at least guitars that suit you?

I think this is the result of illogical GAS.

Lately I've been real into Megadeth and convinced myself I need an Angel of Deth guitar even though I know it would be of very little use to me because i like to play alot of other genres, not just metal, rarely play metal infact
So i know where you're coming from kinda

Tough choice, hmmm Slash's Epiphone, or his Gibson guitar?

I think a lot of people fall into that thought process. Thats why they make sig. models: for tools who have to be like their fav.

Having said that, I own a Schecter partly becuase of Synyster Gates, but also becuase it was reasonably price for and FR and it came with EMG's. Besides, we all play guitar for different reasons, but mostly to aspire to greatness.

There's nothing wrong with being inspired by an artist, but you should buy a guitar that speaks to you.

i bought a jackson warrior because roope latvala of children of bodom had a guitar with almost the same shape and when i played something on that guitar for the first time i think i decided to quick xD but now i'm really happy with my jackson warrior (L) after some reparations....

Recently I've been getting into Gilbert, so I thought for about a week or so I absolutely HAD to get the PGM301. I'm over that now, but I did realize I wanted a different tone from what I now have(emgs). So I'm into Ibanez RG now, instead of esp SV.

I couldn't agree more. I should clarify: aspiring and emulating the greats is important, but don't try and BE them.

Personally I don't like sig. models... but I must admit the equipment on Herman Li sig. EGEN18 is enough to be considered porn to most guitarist.

My two main guitars are all used by 2 of my favourite bands

Fender Mustang - Nirvana & Mudhoney
Sparrow Rat Rod - Lower Class Brats

I do envy Frusciante's guitar rig (not just because they're vintage, but I wish in a few years I can have a nice strat, tele, and jaguar) though...he literally has every guitar I want, and some good effects.

No I never had to "force" myself if you take the meaning of the word literally.

But I have changed the guitar I liked. I used to LOVE Les Pauls, thought they were the sickest thing ever...but then I started getting inspired greatly by John Mayer and now Stratocasters are the love of my life.

I want Brian May's sig, it looks so awesome. And I just happen to love Brian May too, so it's a good match.

I buy guitars based on the tones it can achieve, not whoever played one before.

You CAN play anything with anything....but some guitars sound right for some things, and not for others. Single coils sound retarded for metal, though those who are apeshit about harpsichord probably beg to differ.

Nope. When I'm buying or considering a guitar the person tied to it is the last thing that I think of.I consider things like construction, playability, tone, features, price:quality ratio, and so many other things before I think about what famous person plays it.Come to think of it,I actually never do.

When I was in grade school I saved up my paper route money and got a cheap Jackson V b/c I was a huge Megadeth fan. I got used to V's and now will never own anything but. I have a hard time playing guitars that are normal shaped or have the volume knob placed where your picking hand can hit it, I hate that!!
#22
I try whatever guitars I think I may like. I get subjective on the guitar itself. Just because an artist uses them doesn't mean I try to like them. Sure I'll consider them more heavily(If they like the tone and I like their tone, odds are I'll like the tone), but if I strum it and don't like the feel or tone, it's gone to me.

For years I associated Telecasters with nasal, twangy, dead dog, truck broke down, country western music. Yuck! Now I really like the Tele. Sweet little guitar.

I really like Vai and Gilbert, and I play Ibanez, but I'm not stupid enough to pay for their highly overpriced guitars. No matter how much I like them, you're paying for the name.

I pretty much started playing guitar because of Angus Young, and I still hate SG's.

however, I got into Les Pauls around the time i started listening to Zakk Wylde. I never really thought about it like that, so idk if he's why I looked into them?

I think its just a coincidence

I didn't pick a schecter because my favorite guitarist uses them (Synyster Gates [flame shield up]). I picked up my schecter, not even knowing it was a schecter, i just loved the look of it. then i sat down and played it and loved the sound of it and the playability of it and the feel of it. I was pretty much in love with it. Then i looked at the headstock. Schecter Omen 6! the low end model and i picked that over many other more expensive guitars. Now i upgraded it a little by putting in a seymour duncan invader in the neck and a pearly gates in the bridge, so now it's pretty much perfect right now. so just cause you like someone that uses a certain guitar doesn't mean you have to buy the same brand. it was just coincidence that I did.

Squier Strat - John Frusciante
RR3 - Alexi Laiho

/me shrug

I like the shape, even if I didn't know those two guys.

It was good to hear other people's opinions about this. I know I don't like to play Les Pauls after owning one, but convincing myself not to get one is so hard.

My second guitar I bought was a white MIM Strat (which I still have...it's my #2 guitar) that I admit I bought because of Hendrix at Woodstock. I'm happy I got it because I know that Strats are the best suited guitars for me: most comfortable and easy to play, and I love the tones. So in that case it worked out.

As for the Les Pauls, I'll try to resist the temptation to buy one, and just keep doing my own thing, watching Jimmy Page but not getting that guitar because he likes it. And anyways I do have a Tele

i've looked into brands before because of certain players but not really their actual guitar. I love all metallica stuff so naturally i looked into esp, but kirk's sig models are ugly as ****. james' new sig iron cross is pretty sweet looking, but i know i wouldn't like a les paul due to poor upper fret access. that being said, when you first start out, it's really easy to get caught up in the hype of certain guitars because so and so played them. when you know nothing about them, you look for anything to make your choice seem more secure.

not true. I for one never listen to Rush but i thought the geddy lee sig had an awesome tone and neck. I have never found a neck faster than mine. it is wafer thin. sometimes i think the normal jazz bass necks feel a little to round. i like them very very thin.

not really, although i do use the same guitars(Teles, Dots/ES) though i dont use Lp's much
really wouldnt matter what guitar keith, or prince, used, i just like teles and semi hollows

No but i did start to listen a few guitarists , because they had a guitar like mine . at one time i owned a grestch and a couple years later the stray cats came out and i thought hey cool this dude has a guitar like mine , and also chet atkins etc etc . most of the time it is because i see a guitar in the shop and i think man thats nice looking so i go and try it out.

Because of Marty Friedman I'd get a Jackson Kelly, and because of Jeff Loomis I'd buy his signature Schecter model. Though i would buy em anyways because they are both good guitars :P
