ive got an old worthless MiM strat, that im sick to death of looking at. the pickguard is severely damaged, the neck is dented and the machine heads are coming loose. the pickups are also aweful.

so i decided im going to mod it. ive got the time and a sort of plan about how to do it

i was thinking along the lines of this;

1. replace strat neck with jackson or simelar neck with reverse headstock (i like reverse headstock)
2. put gold machine heads into jackson/simelar headstock.
3. replace pickguard with new 3-ply strat pickguard (already ordered)
4. replace pickups with stacked humbuckers
5. install FR system (probably OFR or kahler)
6. get custom paintjob or graphic

do you think this is a sensible way to go about this? how difficult do you recon this would be?

thanks.

I'll tell you what, just send me that ole' strat and I'll give it a good home and take care of it and you can use the money that you would have used to upgrade it to just buy a new guitar.

nahh id rather upgrade it. ive always wanted to, now that the hardware and neck on this thing are almost beyond repair ive got an excuse to fiddle with something expensive. lol

i dont see the point of modding the guitar THAT much,

custom paint jobs will be at least 100 smackers (probably more)

if your really want 2 mod it

change the pups
install a wilko (floyd will be to much hassle)
change neck
change pickguard

thats what i think

or why not just not waste that not money and buy a guitar, it'll be WAAY more convenient & possibly cheaper

but hey this is UG opinions are summin that never gets listened to *sigh*

i am buying a guitar too lol

see the bottom of my sig?

why dont u just combine that money 2 get a better guitar!

it'll make more sense at the end of the day

also your amp? personally id consider changing that

eughh to amp

If you're going to replace the neck, make sure to use one that has the same scale length as the strat (25.5 inches I believe). Also, I would argue against installing a Floyd Rose simply because you're going to have to rout out the body to make room for it and possibly modify the pick-guard as well. The rest would be easy. It might not be cost effective compared to buying a new guitar, but you will end up with a guitar that you like and that you have a history with, which is worth something.

your playing through a spider

anyway on topic, if you paint it yourself I would do all that, but as someone mentioned already painting will be expensive and a custom paint job will be well over 100 bucks I got my pickgaurd flamed for that by a friend

can anyone recommend some good but not too pricey stacked humbuckers? i dont want to have to modify the pickguard because knowing me ill screw it up.

i wont have any problems installing them because im a GCSE electronics student.

and i like the H&K. its good enough for what i use it for.

once ive got modding this and buying the epi out of the way, im going to look into valve heads.

i might just get a more comfortable neck and new pickguard, and just live with the pickups for a while, and change them later on when ive got more cash.

thanks for the advice guys.

Here is my latest strat

USA body
Mightymite neck with ebony board
Warmoth custom pickguard
Rockfield Fat A$$ pickups (something different)
volume and 3 way toggle
The color will be changed in the spring when the weather get warmer.
The Floyd is on order.

I say mod it, then it will be yours. If you can't buy the one you want you have to build it.

Wow, nice strat.

On topic: Go ahead and mod it. I moused over the thread to see a preview of the text and saw "worthless MiM strat" and was interested in what made it "worthless". From your description, I'd say go ahead, just don't Floyd it like the other guys said.

Maybe your opinions don't get listened to because of your amp?

TS, I'd say mod it, but leave the body all beat up with everything else new

Just buy a new guitar

I thought this was the "Gear Building & Customizing" forum, not the "Buy New Guitars" forum.

Dont' put a jackson neck on it. If it has 24 frets, it won't be right for the pickguard the neck pocket WILL NOT fit a jackson. This may cause action problems, intonation problems, the neck being wobbly, loss of sustain, or a neck that just won't fit in to the pocket.
Got that? Don't be stupid.
Just buy a strat neck.

Pretty much. And even if it does fit, if its 24 frets you wont be able to have a neck pickup.

^That's what I said... I clearer terms than I put them in. Listen to him.

you guys realised he is banned right, so theres no point in posting in here no more...

you know he can still browse the forums?

You can have a neck pickup with 24 frets, you just will have to move it backwards
just check this
