I like to detune my guitar alot (drop D, drop C, DADGAD). I probaly tune down to drop D four different times a day while at other times im in standard tuning. Can detuning my guitar so much wear out the nut prematurely?

If so, at this rate how long would it take it to wear down enough to matter?

Thanks

1) Yes.
2) Years. Many many years. Don't worry about it, nuts are cheap and can be replaced.

What material is the nut made in?

He's got a GAX-70, they come with plastic nuts I believe.

Ok thanks for the info.

Can I replace the nut myself or does that need to be done by a profesional?

(it doesnt really matter, I can take it to a guitar shop)

Thanks again.

I had the nut on my GAX-30 replaced a few months ago and if I remember correctly the nut on the 70 is the same as on the 30, so here's how to go about it:

You need a pro to do it. There are no nuts made specifically for GAX guitars, so you need to get a blank one and cut it to size. The nut itself will cost 4 or 5 bucks, getting it cut and installed will cost roughly 30 or 40. That's for graphite nuts, a bone nut will usually cost you more because the slots for the strings are not pre-cut by the nut manufacturer on those usually, unlike with graphite ones.

But really, it will take years until you notice that your current nut is worn out, if at all.

TS if you're worried about wear then rub a graphite tipped pencil in the cut.
it'll keep the string moving freely.

Ok, my bad, that was pretty immature of me.

TS, the nuts would probably eventually wear out, but after a few years at the very least, although it might be a bit less if you're talking about the Ibanez Gio.
