OK, here's a stoner's guide to death metal and black metal:

1. Atheist - Unquestionable Presence. It will blow your mind. And then do it again. And again.

2. Demilich - Nespithe. Play this late at night to descend into a weird underworld where nothing quite doesn't make sense, but only makes sense when taken as an abstract mood or feeling. Awesome.

3. Burzum - Det Som Engang Var. A twisted journey through the mind, stopping at the land of the dead. Almost ritual music for me.

4. Immortal - Pure Holcaust. When you are fully stoned, it sounds like horses galloping through an underwater symphony.

5. Incantation - Onward to Golgotha. Imagine wandering through a post-apocalyptic city, seeking Jesus to rape and kill him. That's this.

I'm not responsible for your mind becoming twisted if you listen to these while high, but I had a blast doing so.

Frank Zappa.

I know he never did drugs, but that's sometimes hard to believe when you hear him.

Steering clear of the obvious stoner metal choices, fit as they may be...

Arcturus - La Infernale Masquerade: Much more carnivallish than their other albums, but still having that sinister undertone. Recommended at high sativa doses.

Gorguts - Obscura: Tread lightly with this one, proper headfvkk if you try to listen closely.

Cephalic Carnage - Anomalies: Can't really explain it, but there's something about that record that is just fun.
Dyer's Eve is awesome, and has an abnormally large penis, which doesn't act as any hinderance to his everyday life despite its freakishly large size.

i've always found pop to be harder to play than metal... especially shred metal... it's just really fast tremolo picking and the occasional palm mute... and the only chords you have to worry about are power chords...

Opeth, Symphony X, and Sonata Arctica are some of my favorites stoned. But pretty much all of my music is better high.

I can't even handle obscura without being high

I always like listening to Cryptopsy, especially the song (The pestilence that walketh in darkness) where Lord Worm reads a psalm out of the bible. "Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night, for the arrow that flyeth by day......"
Dream Theater = "The auditory equivalent of masturbating into a cup and then smelling it."

I don't smoke at all really, but I remember once I was high off my face and I was listening to Omnium Gatherum, and it was amazing.

Then The Berzerker came on, and that made absolute perfect musical sense too.

Drugs are good sometimes

I always have a huge grin on my face when i listen to Candlemass stoned.

Any kind of uber-wank metal is just awesome stoned.

Also, Genghis Tron.

Uhh, music entrances me without drugs, It's just you see, once you've experienced some of your favourite music whilst sparking a doob, there really is nothing else like it. These days I listen to a lot of jazz fusion and that without the intoxication is musically intense, so when stoned its just entrancing. Allan Holdsworth, Bireli Lagrene, Weather Report etc

Metal-wise however, I guess anything goes. I sometimes like to delve into the profound stuff though. Deathspell Omega's 'Fas' is absolutely cataclysmic. And Septic Flesh. Oh and more recently Mirrorthrone.

1. Atheist - Unquestionable Presence. It will blow your mind. And then do it again. And again.

Nice.

I find a lot of metal doesn't work with the herb. I tend to turn to rock, prog and some shred. It also helps that a lot of it is recorded in analogue.

Deep Purple is one of my recent favorites. Both Cynic albums are excellent, (though it had to grow on me), as well as Aeon Spoke's self titled.
Ra, off Jordan Rudess's solo album Rhythm of Time is fantastic, though it can kinda feel dragged out in the middle.

Cool harmonies (Maiden school and some melodeath) are somewhat like fastfood for the stoned mind imo, but they most definitely work too. Stuff like Wintersun and Dark Tranquillity (Punish My Heaven in particular) qualifies.

Then there are those ****ed up atonal stuff that just hit your head like a monster. I'm talking about the NMCC solo (despite Meshuggah being one of my least favorite bands while stoned), Holdsworth and Buckethead even. These are more or less a novelty, but in small doses are nothing short of amazing.
Lost interest.

Any song that sets a wicked picture in your imagination is good when your stoned. Like Iron Man or Electric Funeral by Black Sabbath or Viking Metal like Into the Battle by Ensiferum or Thor Arise by Amon Amarth. These are good examples of songs that will make you trip out on the thoughts of the theme given. Of course there are many others, maybe even better than those songs for it but for me those songs made me think of Iron Man getting cast out, or HUGE trippy viking battles with lots of gore and swinging axes. Pure awesomeness!

All I'm saying is The Fall of Man by Arcturus was freaking awesome after smoking some chronic and driving down on an empty freeway at two in the morning.

Anything off Buckethead's "The Elephant man's alarm clock

The song isn't off of that album, but whenever I hear "Woods of Suicides" I picture someone being chased through a dark forest by a hatchet-weilding maniac.

This. I've heard smokers say they don't smoke while playing live because they don't get as euphoric as they would sober.

I disagree Slipknot is more technical than Necrophagist and more brutal than Suffocation, that's why I do hardcore dances to it with my 14 year old friends.
#33
Hah, I definitely do not smoke if I'm going to be performing. This is probably more of a personal thing and not a general consensus, but I can't play for shit when I'm baked. My technical ability goes down the drain and I tend to easily forget things. So I like to stay straight up sober when I'm playing. Afterwards, however, Is a different story.

Right on man. Music like Agalloch or Isis... it's all the drugs I'll ever need.

But to answer truthfully, The Monolith Deathcult's Trivmvirate album is THE MOST AWESOME album to listen to whilst baked.

Generally speaking, I prefer Prog, Sludge, and Doom while high and leave Death, Thrash, and Black metal for when I'm drunk. There are exceptions of course.

I'll have a bourbon.
