Alright,
UG, I have been this close to buying a 5150 for the past two weeks but I have either had money problems or just deciding if I want more versatility for a few more bucks or whatever. So, after much deliberation...I have chosen three amps each with slight ramifications and so forth.

5150 Combo, Bugera 6262 Combo, or eBay hunt for a really cheap Mesa Mark IV combo.

So, I want the extremities of the 5150, but don't want to sacrifice cleans and don't want to spend my 140$ pedal fund on an ISP.

The 6262 has better cleans and the built-in noisegate but will cut into my Maxon fund.

The Mark IV is what I'd want the most, but it's obviously the most expensive and I'd have to do some massive bargain hunting or eBay searching.

I'm torn UG, console me with advice.

GOREDIT: I forgot rule one of this place...gawrsh.

I mstly play progressive metal, but I've been known to dabble in jazz and rockabilly along with 70's crunch rock. I will be giggin shortly (2-3 months), and will be recording soon after that.

Get the Mark IV.
Even if the 6262's cleans are better than the 5150, they still aren't as good as the Mesa's.

The Mark IV has nice cleans and is much more versatile than either the peavy or bugera, and definitely worth waiting for a good deal or saving up a bit more, imo.

EDIT:
I feel dumb for talking about the wrong amp.

Even though the 6505's cleans are better than the 5150, they still suck.

It's the 5150 II or 6505+ with better cleans, 6505 = 5150. And the cleans on the 5150 aren't Fender/Vox, obviously, but the 6505+ is a good step up and are usable.

I'd save for the Mark IV, but if you really don't want to stray too far from your budget, you could check out the XXX and throw some JJ's in it, if you'd need a darker tone.

The Bugera has arguably better cleans than the 5150 with a similar amount of gain. The tones are somewhat different, but aside from that the only other issue would be reliability, which really isn't that big of deal if you get it serviced by a qualified technician.

i'd get the mark iv.. if anything, it'll save you money in the long run if the 5150 or 6262 are just an intermediate step.. that way you can have the best of both worlds.

$950 minus the pedal fund, if I can get the Mark IV, I will add the $140, but I've never found a IV cheap enough.

I was gonna say mark III as well, you should be able to find one cheaper.

While no Mark amps, the F/DC series do a pretty good impression, certainly worth a try if that's your thing. I really wish I could've kept mine for hard rock and metal but I just couldn't afford to get a BJr then. You can find them cheaper than the bugeras and they're easier to find that Mark IIIs

I know, I was confused myself.

With the road case? If so, then I'm assuming it has the "Mesa" tubes in it.

First off the cleans on the 6262 aren't much better. Get a 6505+ or 5150 2..same amp of course. Another is the noise gate does NOTHING. Maybe cuts a little amp hum but do not think the noise gate on this amp is like a noise gate pedal like an isp or ns-2. It will not cut your guitar feedback really. With any of these high gain amps you will need a ns-2 or isp if you plan on turning it up any. These amps are really noisy as most high gain tube amps are. So go ahead and be ready to atleast spend 100 bucks on a pedal. I have yet to hear a noise gate on any amp that gets the job done. There are some that are okay though. The one on the 333xl bugera does nothing but kills amp hum too. And doesn't even kill all of that.

The 6262 cleans again... are not that great. Don't think that if you get a 6262 or a 6505+ or 5150 2 over a regular 5150, 6260, or 6505 you are going to have these awesome cleans that are better. They are useable. I use them myself and they are okay but you will need a reverb pedal ATLEAST if you want a decent clean.

The mark is a fine amp but some people hate it and some people love it. You have to tweak it a lot. IMO it does not sound as mean or brutal as the 6505.

So if I was you... I'd go 5150 which includes the 6505 and 6505+. Don't go bugera it's a copy. Just get the real thing so it'll last and you'll be satisfied.

I was going to recommend the Mark III as well. Very similar gain structure, 1 less channel, but usually about $500 cheaper.

I was chillin' and grillin' at my local guitar store when I noticed a beauty in the corner. A Mark IV combo had been there for about two or three months, a little battered (the casing was filed on one edge ) and needed one pre-amp tube, but nonetheless...I bought it for $829.99 on the spot. I've decided to keep it there until the tubes come in, and I'll have it in about 4-5 weeks. I ended up spending my Maxon fund a wee portion of savings and amp fund for the tubes, though.

On a slightly related note, I traded my old amp and a cheapo guitar for an ESP Explorer knock-off, was worth the deal.

I wanted a new set of pre-amp tubes seeing as it was missing one and was sitting there for months (from what the clerk told me) .

Once those tubes come in though, jesus christ.
