Hello, so I want an acoustic and I've decided on these two brands (Ovation and Seagull) and I want to find out your opinion on which one is better, under $350. Please help.

Ok, I decided to eliminate the Ovation out of this but added Breedlove and Takamine guitars, so out of those three, which ones do you giys consider is the best to get?

That's better!

I prefer Takamine myself. Solid top if you can find it. They have a lot of respect and make a quality product.

Avoid the Jasmine at all costs. I had one about a decade ago that was pampered like a $5000 D-45, yet it still practically disintegrated after about two years. The top started to cave in near the soundhole, and the capstans (what the strings are wrapped around) looked like they were bending off the headstock. The tone control didn't appear to do anything, and worst of all I bought it from a less-than-reputable dealer for almost $500 with no case or any "freebies". Same guitar sells at GC for $250, best I remember, and I bought the one I had in 1996.

Thanks for replying, but do you know if its possible to buy Breedlove, Seagull and Takamine cutaways for around $300?

Sure! There's a sticky for guitars under $300. Give me an hour to dig through GC/Musician's Friend and i'll see if i can find a good one, just opinion though.

Personally, I don't spend that amount, ever. I buy used laminates that I can pick up cheap for less than $100 and try to resell for a bit more (greater fool theory), or I spend about $600+ for higher quality. I trade LOTS of guitars, and its just difficult for me to purchase anything in that range that I can resell without taking a huge loss, so bear in mind I'm more than a little biased.

This is a low priced solid top. The brand is not widely respected, though.

This is a great Takamine, with the cutaway. And solid top. Good buy.

But I really love the tone of Martin guitars, even if they are laminates. This is a bit smaller, though. Raise that amount to $400 and you'll open up a lot of the low end Martin dreadnoughts. I'm probably the only guy on this site who likes them, though. :shrug

Again, those are just opinions. Let me see what Musicians Friend has; I went to GC first because they seem to be cheaper.

EDIT were you looking for an acoustic electric, with a pickup, or just acoustic?

Grrr... Musician's Friend is saying "genuine spruce top" on their low-end laminates. Don't fall for that gimmick. Solid top is the phrase you are looking for. That said, here is some good ones from them.

Flame shield up for recommending Fender I had an older laminate that sounded spectacular; picked it up for $80 in a pawn shop in El Paso. It was sweet. That Alvarez is probably best out of those three, though. That's going off the phenominal love of Alvarez in these forums. I haven't played as many of those as I have some of the other brands. Hope this helps.

EDIT that first takamine is probably the best out of those, it really depends on each individual guitar though, instead of make/model
