Well, I've only been playing a year, but I'm about to get a new guitar and want to know what I should play and sound decent without pissing off the employees.

(Created as opposed to "Songs NOT to play in the music store". And yes I searched the threads before I typed this up.)

Ummm I know the people very well at my music store, so it would varie between what they would like. Your best bet would be to play the best/hardest song you know.
#9
if youre going to get a new guitar, play whatever type of music you like/interested in. you wanna get the right type of guitar that is suited for that/has the right feel/right sound. its not about pissing off employees or such.
#10
If you are spending your hard earned money in their store they shouldn't bitch about any damn thing you play. You should be able to go in there and play marry had a little lamb and they shouldn't say **** cause they are taking your money.
#11
Who the **** cares? You're there to check out a guitar, if it sounds good. I dont know about you but I can concentrate more on the sound if I just play a few simple chords, and twist the knobs a little to see if there are any flaws. But yeah..

I once played Icky Thump on a Strat (which I bought BTW) through a Randall with a Marshall module and when I finished and started to put things back where I took them the shopkeeper was humming the melody for the whole duration I was confirming my purchase. That was PHÖNN.

This. I play a couple simple scales and open chords to hear the equipment. I may play a couple parts of songs but I usually do so to hear what the gear sounds like. I know what I can play - I'm not there to make friends or get props for chops. I'm there to hear something in the gear, or not.

Exactly the sales person isnt gonna care what you play they just want to get your cash so they can get their commision on whatever your buying. Your not gonna see any of the other customers ever again probably so who cares what they think about your playing.

I'd firstly play something horribly out of tune real loud so they leave me the hell alone and then try and see if I'm comfortable with the guitar (chords, scales, fiddle with the knobs and stuff.)

i once went into a music shop with my friend and jammed on orange half stacks(turned WAY down)in Em(LOLZ) for like 15 minutes the few people in there watched for the duration until the shop keeper kicked us out... but then my buddy was playing a $3000 guitar both of us on his most expensive amps w/o any intention of buying...

i think he should have paid us for showcasing his best gear...

but yeah dont just jam...

I can't say I spend enough time in guitar shops to hear people playing lots of the same song, so I'd say whatever you want to play. You're the one spending money, if the employee is hassling you over what you play then they're not exactly building up a good rapport with you are they?

However, songs I would like to hear in a guitar shop:

Joe Satriani - Surfing with the Alien, Crushing Day, Satch Boogie
Steve Vai - Fire Garden Suite
Metallica - Dyers Eve (would be awesome if played properly), Battery

The store I take lessons at has a CLASSIC sign hanging inside...

Don't step on my stairway, and keep your teen spirit to yourself!

Ive seen them ask a kid to leave for playing Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Morale of the story, don't think because you play horribly out of tune, or just something stupid, that they will leave you alone...
They might just ask you to leave...

Improvise.

It's what I do everytime I'm in a guitar store.

Either that or play your favorite jazz licks or piano chords.
