This is the only way I can successfully alternate pick and was wandering if I should stop.

Honestly, that's how I've always played. I use Floyds though, so I don't mute the strings when I alt. pick. So it kinda depends on if you're wanting to mute the notes or not.
I play guitar in a ska band.

There is actually no wrong or right, everyone's got their own style...
It's ok to play like this, but pay attention that if you've got a floyd rose trem, you don't push your hand down too hard, because it'll sound out of tune..

Yes its very dangrous. If you do this evry now and then your hand will fall off because of iron poisening. true story.....
