I'll preface this by saying that I did search, but couldn't find anything to help me.

I recently picked up bass, inspired mostly by the likes of Shawn Lee. I'm enjoying myself, but I would love to be able to mimick the tone that he uses a lot. It's a tone that is frequently used in 'Vegas' kinds of songs, if that makes any sense. Go to iTunes and look up "Theme from Andrex" or "Sexy Beast" by Shawn Lee's Ping Pong Orchestra and you'll hear it. It's sort of chunky, accentuating each note. I tried using a pick, but that doesn't quite get the same sound. I thought it might be a compressor, but I don't want to buy one until I know for sure. Can anyone help me out with this?

I'm using an Ibanez GSR200 through an Acoustic B20, if that makes a difference.

Maybe try soloing your P pickup and using flatwounds?
